A friend of mine (grew up in same neighborhood, babysat, parents were friends etc) has a girl, same age as my son. I LOVE her name, they made it up and I think that it fits well with my sons name in the uniqueness. We moved 2 hours away, can I use the name, when/if we have a girl?
DS is Damari and her DD is Leighra (a combo of ashley and sara)
We aren't close enough that I could ask her and get an honest answer and she'd know b/c our moms are still really close and of course...FB.
Re: Could I steal this name?
If so, EW. What about Lyra? Atleast it's a name.
Lira, Lera, or Lyra is nice.
Leighra (I agree with mj.rielly, I'd pronounce it Lay-ruh) is not so nice.
I don't think you can steal a name per se, but when it's that uncommon (and that is directly where you got the name), I personally wouldn't.
If it was a "my friend named her kid Connor/Lucy/Brooke/Henry, can I use it too?" post, I would say go for it. But too use the same very unusual name with the same creative spelling -- no, I wouldn't advise doing that.
If you do choose that, though, go with a more authentic spelling, like Lyra.
Ditto this.
My first name is Leigh, so I get the pronunciation of "lee-ra", but that being said, I don't really like it. I guess you can use it if you want to, but it's going to seem fairly odd, it's a very unique name and you obviously got it from this person.
And FWIW, I HATE it when "leigh" is pronounced "lay"-- I can't think of a single word with "leigh" in it that is pronounced "lay" besides Leighton Meester's name!! And knowing what a crack-head her mom is, I'm guessing she's the one who's got it wrong!
Uh...I wouldn't use that name. Not because you'd be taking it from someone else, but because that atrocity will make your daughter look like the child of uneducated, underage parents who use their child to make a statement about themselves ("we're so unique and special!").
And it's not unique and special, because you didn't think of it.
M.J....You are PERFECTION.
ETA: Lyra is beautiful!
Gender: Feminine
Usage: Astronomy
Lee-ra pronunciation immediately makes me think of Lira, the old Italian currency before the Euro was introduced.
Personally, I hate the name Leighra. It's weird. Although most people would say you can't "steal" a name, I personally think that copying such a you-neek name from your friend wouldn't be right.
I agree with others. Lyra (LIE-RAH) is a beautiful option.
If I remember correctly, the Lira was the Italian dollar until they began to use the Euro. Also, Lyra and Lyre are musical instruments.
You could, but I wouldn't.
Leighra makes me think of She-ra and He-man.
Ditto!

My instinct was to pronounce it LAY-ruh, like others have said. I don't like the spelling or LEE-ruh (spelled any way) as a name. I do love Lyra (LIE-ruh) though!
I wouldn't use a name/spelling that my friends created for their child, even if I wasn't close to them.

Hmm ok, I guess what I should have said was words with LEIGH in them already. Not "eigh". But whatever, I get your point. I do think this was a bit mean though-- I went to college, have a masters, and I do in fact know English.
Lurking ... but I think she meant she felt sorry for people learning English (not you) because there are so many contradictory pronunciation rules & complicated grammar rules in the English language, and that it is a hard language to learn because of this. I don't think she meant to insult you though.
