Cool mist or warm humidifier?

DS has a runny nose, fever, coughing...etc...Do we run a warm or cool mist this time of year.  What's the difference between humidifier and vaporizer?

Re: Cool mist or warm humidifier?

  • my pedi rec. cold mist all the time. they say warm breeds bacteria.  also use a humidifier is just water, where i'm pretty sure the vapoizer you an add medication to it (vicks).  hth.
  • I know pedis recommend cool mist, but I always use the warm vaporizer when DS is sick.  I change the water daily so I don't worry about bacteria.  It seems much more effective...like when it's been running and I walk into DS's room, I can really feel the moisture in the air.  I got mine at the drugstore for about $20 from Vicks.   I spent a lot more money on a fancy cool mist one and I dont even use it!

Warm mist does not bred bacteria, the mist is boiled = kills bacteria.  Cool mist is usually recomended for safety reasons. I use warm but keep it well out of the reach of the kids.
