Version anyone?

Hello,

Has anyone had the version (External Cephalic Version) procedure done?  If so can you share your experience?

I am 36 weeks pregnant, and the baby is still in breech position, so the Dr. wants to try this procedure at 37 weeks in order to turn the baby around- I heard it was very painful (not as painful as birth I am sure) anyone have any experience with this procedure? I would love to hear.

thanks in advance!

  • My friend had it done (Kittylove here on the bump).  She said it hurt.  She also went into labor VERY shortly after and still ended up with a c/s.

  • My mom had it done ( some 25 years ago mind  you) and she said it hurt. She said that despite them using tons of lotion or whatever they used her belly looked rug burned. I was still breech and she ended up having a c/s

  • Like pp's, I've heard that the success rate is not so hot... I'm looking into this now too after finding out today that my LO is breech too.  We'll see.

  • i havent had one done, but ive seen them done when I was doing my maternity rotation for nursing school....they dont always work, can put you in labor and from the ones I watched they all said they hurt!

  • I had one and it worked. It was more uncomfortable/scary than painful and it worked right away so it only lasted for about a minute or two. The doctor basically put his one hand around the head and the other around the butt and firmly, but smoothly, rotated the baby. They monitored the baby and I for about an hour before and an hour after it was done.

I had mine done at 37 weeks and the baby is still head-down so my doctor is optimistic that he will stay that way. I went into it with the mindset that if I felt too uncomfortable or it was too painful I would have them stop if it wasn't working right away.

The nurse said it was one of the quickest/easiest ones she had seen so I am sure it is more painful for others. I didn't have any soreness or anything afterwards either. I don't think I would have gone through with it had my doctor not had such a good success rate of flipping babies. I also really trusted that he wouldn't put me or LO in danger.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • There are some vidoes of them on Youtube! Didn't look as bad as I thought it would. If I could try it, I would, but it's not an option for my baby because of how her head is in the placenta.

  • My baby is also currently breech. I heard that accupunture has a higher success rate and is less painful. I may try that instead of versioning.
