Camping ...?

My family goes camping every August (right around the corner!)
and I have no idea if I can do it w LO.
Its 7 days, great lake side location the camp site has bathrooms a little ways off but thats it.
I can pump, that's not an issue. But I feel almost like we'd have to move.
I can never just 'get up and go' (kudos to the mom who can)
She has to have enough bottles, I have to have pumped recently, clothes packed, entertainment, back up clothes, blankets, flares, you know the whole nine ...

Would you go ?

Re: Camping ...?

  • My D is about 3 weeks younger than yours, and we've been camping 3 times now. Do you want to go?  If so, you can totally make it work. If no, then I'd just say no. My advice, 1) plan well and pack early, 2) don't expect to do much while you're there and let other people do everything they can.

(I don't pump, so can't say from experience what that's going to be like. It might require a little flexibility in schedule or your cleaning/sterilizing standards, but if you really want to go, I would still work something out.)

  • That is a tough call. I have an older one and I regret not doing enough in the early years....but your list is making me tired too.  If hubby helps pack I say go for half of it.
  • I would go but it sounds like you don't want to go. Maybe go for a couple days. Check out the weather forecast and pick a couple days that look good. 7 days is a long time for your first trip with the baby. One or two nights may make you feel more comfortable. Maybe have a back up hotel. If things are going bad you can check into a hotel for the night.

Yep! We are going this weekend, tentband all! I've been told it's much easier while they are this small. We are bringing: stroller, pack n play, blanket to play on ground, clothes, diapers and wipes, a toy or two and burp rags. It might be a little easier for me because I won't be pumping, but you should go and enjoy time with your fam!

  • We went a few weeks ago and my son loved it.  He loved being outside so much.  Sleeping was a little rough but we made do.  I would totally do it again.

  • If it wasn't so bloody hot we'd go. Take the dog and DS and pop a tent. I have no problems nursing in front of anyone I know though so pumping wouldn't be an issue, nor would bottles. If you want to go, go. If not, I wouldn't worry about it. The weather will likely be too warm for good sleep anyway.

  • Sounds rough to me...I don't think I could survive more than a night or two with DS, but he is cranky and not a great sleeper.  I am also not a camper.  I'm sure if I went camping more often I would be more willing to go with DS at this age.  My DH can't wait to start family camping.  I agree with others who said maybe go for less days and not all 7 if you are worried it will be too much.

Yup, I'd go. We went with DD when she was 10 weeks and are going again in August. We have a pop-up camper, so we're off the ground and had  space to stand up, but no water or electric or anything. DD did fine the first time, but we were thankful that my family was there to help. We brought the stroller and mosquito netting and kept her covered at night. She didn't get bitten at all and slept well in her PnP. We did her nighttime routine per usual - substituting a wipe-down with a damp washcloth for a bath.

Definitely just bring extras of everything and sanitizing wipes for everyone's dirty hands. You can always boil water to clean pacifiers/nipples if you need to. I brought my double electric and pumped in the car in the mornings - stored the milk in a cooler and gave it to her in a bottle later in the day after warming it in a pot of warm water. The stroller was key for naps, and the carrier was key for our day-trips.

If you don't want to go and don't think you'll enjoy it, don't go. You have to be laid back and anticipate a good time to make it enjoyable...if you anticipate it being too stressful, it will be stressful and you shouldn't bother, IMO. GL with whatever you decide!

  • what a great topic as I just got home from the Bahamas and fishing for me was much different this trip than before.  All I can say is...yes you can absolutely do it..but if you have some family around who can help out holding the baby...wearing the baby..ect it will be a godsend.  For me..not having the bouncer, the swing, the PNP meant I was on duty 24/7.  Had I had  a few relatives that would baby watch for a few here and there , the husband and i really could have got our fishing on!!!!  I am not saying it was bad..I am just saying it was different.  Our SPF 50 tent and the bug zapper and the sunscreen and the sand proof blanket (just kidding)....Hey it was different....but the little guy was great and mom and dad are the ones that need to adjust!  Happy Camping,,,,just do it!
  • We just got back from a 3 week camping trip so if you want to you can do it. Do you have to pump or can you just bf when LO needs it? If you do your best bet is to get a car transformer so you can turn on the car and pump in there. What do you guys do while camping? Hike? Sight see? When we were planning an outing I would normally pack diaper bag type stuff in a backpack that DH or I would carry.
