Hereditary question regarding fraternal twins

This may be a stupid question, but im curious. I know that it is only from the mothers side, not fathers. That being said, if one of my kids (boys) have a girl does she have a higher chance of having fraternal twins?

Re: Hereditary question regarding fraternal twins

  • potentially, as the girl would be the mother and it would be from her family line.

  • I have girls so all my daughters have the potential of having twins.   If I had boys, it would be up to their wives and their mother's side of the family to have twins.  So no, your boys can't pass down the chance of having girls.  (At least I am pretty sure they cant)

  • Yes because there could be a gene that you passed to them that remains dormant because they are male, and they could pass it to their children, and their daughters would then be more likely to have fraternal twins. At least that's what I read in a book. I don't remember which one it was though - I read so many.

  • This is how I think of it:

    My choromosomes: (X, X)
    My son's chormosomes: (X, Y)
His daugther's chromosomes (X, X)   <------ One of those Xs could be the X that causes the hyperovulation. I believe that's a 25% chance she will end up with my X chromosome

  • I got the twin gene from my dad, who is a fraternal twin (meaning this probably how I'm having twins)

  • The only instance of fraternal twins that I know of in my family come from my father's side of the family so I'm assuming that the gene can be passed down through either men or women.

  • My dad's dad (so my paternal grandfather) was a triplet. So maybe that's how I ended up dropping my multiple eggs?
  • My dad has a fraternal twin brother and I am now expecting twins.   I think that's where the rumored 'skips a generation' thing comes in to play.
  • Although your husband can't increase YOUR chances of having fraternals, your father's genes can increase your chances, so your daughters can have a higher chance of having multiples themselves, and your sons can have a higher chance of passing on the gene to their daughters.
