First appt with allergist

DD has MSPI, is EBF, and I am milk and soy free due to it. She was rechecked this past Saturday and her stool is still positive for blood. We go back to the pedi in one month. I was able to get an appointment with a pedi allergist between now and then. I have a few questions:

1. Do I need to take her? Why or why not?

2. What will happen at the first appointment?

3. what if their course of treatment is different than the pedi (which I am comfortable with what we are currently doing)?

TIA!

Re: First appt with allergist

  • 1. Do I need to take her? Why or why not? - I would assume so. They might want to do a skin test. Even though she's so little, some docs would do a skin test on an infant.  I would call to make sure if you should bring her for a possibility of doing a skin test.

    2. What will happen at the first appointment? Depends if they test her or not. I would assume for you to even get an allergy appointment they would want to do a pricking test.  If you don't take her, not sure.. probably just chat (?) -that's why i would think it's important to take her.

    3. what if their course of treatment is different than the pedi (which I am comfortable with what we are currently doing)? go with the one that makes you feel more comfortable.  Follow your mommy gut on who's treatment you want to follow.

    GOOD LUCK!

Yes you need to take her so they can do an examination and possibly skin prick testing.

    2. What will happen at the first appointment?

At our first appointment (at 6 months) they got a basic history of her issues and why we were there, then did skin testing, gave us some prescriptions as a "just in case" and we were told to come back when she is 1 year old for further testing.

    3. what if their course of treatment is different than the pedi (which I am comfortable with what we are currently doing)?

They are going to suggest what they think is best for your child. If it is different, tell them what your regular pedi is doing and ask if that would work instead (then ask why/why not). Honestly, if your LO still has blood in her stool, it may be necessary to change what you are doing in order for her to get better, and you need to be open to that as well. GL.

    TIA!

  • definately take her.  If they test her- they may find more/different allergies than what your pedi is guessing at with no tests.  She could have more allergies than milk/soy or have other triggers altogether.

If the course of treatment doesn't match up- ask a lot of questions, do some research on your own and go with your gut on what you think will be best for your daughter.
