BFing and drinking

Just curious - If you're BFing, what's your attitude about drinking?

I haven't found any consistent opinion from Dr. Google. So far I've read to not do it at all, a drink a day is OK, a drink occasionally is OK if you wait 3 hours to feed, and drink a beer a day increase supply.

Re: BFing and drinking

  • I have had the odd beer and the odd glass of wine. I actually heard that the best way to do it is to have your drink while you breast feed. That way the milk LO is getting is all clear and you have the longest time before the next feeding. Of course it looks kinda funny when you are breast feeding and have a drink in hand :)

  • I heard beer increases supply. If you drank a glass of wine while you were preg then I don't see why you shouldn't drink a glass while BFing. I have had a drink or two after LO goes to bed at night since she started to sleep in long stretches. I never drink enough to get drunk though.

  • I've been drunk a few times. Here is my rule: If I drink one, I do nothing different. If I drink two, I wait 3 hours from the end of the last one to feed. If I drink three or more, I pump and dump once-- but I always test it with the alcohol strips out of curiosity. Then I don't pump/feed again until morning.

I really feel like I have the best supply when I drink one beer a night.

  • Take this with a grain of salt because I am obviously no expert, but I read that the amount of alcohol in your blood is the amount of alcohol in your breastmilk... so if you got out and get completely trashed for a birthday party or something, as soon as your blood level is 0.0 so is your milk, which I read can be 1-3 hours after each drink or something like that soooo.. hope to help? hah
  • I am not a very heavy drinker so I just make sure that I am limiting the amount of drinks I have within a certain period of time so I can still BF LO.

  • I just limit the amount I'm drinking. I typically have a nightly glass of wine -- it's usually just a half glass and I sip it over several hours. I also always make sure I have food in my belly.

  • As much as I would love a margarita, I haven't had any alcohol. I honestly don't seee myself drinking anything until LO is well into having solid food, maybe around 10 months or so.

  • If I am going to have 1 beer or 1 glass of wine, I usually wait until right after I am done feeding my DD. That way it is usually 2 to 3 hours before I have to feed her again. If I know I want more than one, I usually try to pump a bottle for later so than I can drink and then pump and dump. So far I have not had a lot to drink, I still worry about her getting some through the milk. However Dr. Google and other friends who have babies seem to agree that the baby will only get the blood alcohol amount of alcohol if they get any at all from your milk. Hope that helps.
