xp: tandem nursing twins, overactive let down?

So I've been tandem nursing my twins since they were born. It was going great, but for the past week and a half they have been incredibly gassy, fussy, and grunting like crazy. When they nurse, I can hear them gulping, sometimes they even choke and have to let go, etc. From what I've been reading, this sounds like it could be an overactive let down. Has anybody had any experience with this? How can I remedy it?

Today we tried giving the girls bottles of pumped milk, and they were like completely different babies. They weren't gassy or fussy. Even BOTH fell asleep on their own (drowsy but awake, something that they did before this all started happening).

I don't get all that much when I pump, and I know I won't be able to EP. I would much rather just EBF, but I also want my babies to be comfortable.

Any help or advice about this would be great! TIA!!!

  • I had a phase of that.  It regulated when my supply evened out (overactive letdown is usually from oversupply)

Try this link from kellymom.  For tandem, I'd try raising their heads so they're a bit more upright and pop them off when they start to struggle (be prepared with a towel to catch any spray)

I bet you'll be fine in a couple of weeks.

  • I had this problem with my son - as the previous ladies said, it will definitely go away when your supply regulates a bit. I used to, when he would start gulping/choking (yes, choking - I always felt terrible!), remove my boob and let the crazy letdown spray into a towel, then go back to feeding him when the craziness was over. Or, if you are prepared and able, direct the overactive letdown into a cup or something to add to your supply in the fridge. Good luck!

  • Oh, while your supply is so great, if you're ever BFing one at a time, these are great for catching extra.  I'd get 1.5 oz sometimes just from leaking.
