Researching doctors?

How do you go about researching a doctor for your child?  DD's opthomologist is recommending a second eye surgery.  I trust him and am comfortable with him but I feel like I need to get a second opinion, just to reassure myself we are doing the right thing.

Are there reputable websites you use to research a doctor?  Everything I read on DD's condition contradicts itself depending on what website you go to so I've stopped doing random searches.

You can use sites like healthgrades, etc. but honestly, I would just have a conversation with your current doctor and explain that while you trust him, etc. you would like a second opinion before scheduling your child for another surgery and is there someone he could recommend.  He should be willing to give you references in the field.

Can you call the pediatrician's office and ask them for a recommendation?

We have seen Dr. Melissa Kern since DS was born and he's had 2 surgeries with her.  She's fantastic if you'd like that second opinion.  She works out of a Sterling and Arlington office.
