Preemies

Sneaking over for a question.

Hi Ladies!

My girlfriend just had her baby at 28 weeks gestation.  Thankfully he seems to be doing really well.  I know there isn't much that I can do, but if you have any ideas/tips on things I can do to help them or make things easier for them, I'd love to hear it!  Thanks!

  • Delivering meals to her home and/or giftcards to nearby restaurants would be best, most likely. Giftcard to BRU or pick out a prem outfit for her - footless & w/out zippers.

The best thing people did for us was to deliver meals to our house when we were not home (we left a cooler on the front porch to keep things warm/cold). It was great to know they were caring for us but we were usually too exhausted to entertain guests. Other ideas are gas cards, gift cards, helping with cleaning or yardwork....things like that go unnoticed when your baby is sick.

You are a great friend for asking!

  • Things I wished people did:

    • - Dropped off food.  It would have been awesome. You can just ask them to put out a cooler and you can put the food in the cooler.  They can get it out when they get home.  Or, ask for keys so you can take it inside.
    • - Given GCs to restaurants by the hospital (though I would have preferred homemade food).  I ate a lot of crap while in the NICU.
    • - Come over and cleaned our house or did laundry
    • - Offered to come over and let our dogs our during the day while I was out
    • - Come and sat with me in the hospital (none of my family was nearby)

  • What a great friend you are! I love the ideas of bringing your friend food, but I would add to that:

    - go see her at lunch time and bring a coffee (or soda) and a sandwich for her (and you!). Sometimes things come up, and if she can't eat right away, she can save the sandwhich for later.

    - get her lawn mowed or leaves raked for her. Or take her trash to the curb. Load her dishwasher or empty it. Water her plants. She will love you forever. My family did this for me. It makes me cry to think about it.

    - order online preemie clothes. There are very limited outfits at Babies R Us, Target, Walmart. But online, you can find teeny tiny dresses or onesies that no other babies have. Super cute stuff.

    - Make sure she still gets a baby shower. She will have even less money now to go out and buy the things she needs. Help her out and make sure people buy off the registry as clothes from most stores won't fit for many months!

You are a wonderful friend, and my heart goes out to her and her little one. Keep up the love for her, and the prayers.
