Double babies in single cart?

Any suggestions on taking your twins to stores that don't have double carts? My 9 month old boys are about to outgrow their infant car seat's length and I don't know how to manage them both without the infant car seat. I have a baby bjorn but I'm finding it uncomfortable with my 17 pounders - I am petite myself. Any suggestions?! I just called my Target store to request double carts! We'll see...the manager didn't sound too confident.

Re: Double babies in single cart?

  • target was not very responsive to me when i requested double carts - they do have some but they are for bigger kids - the carts with the 2 big red seats in the back... you can't put a baby in those.

my local grocery store was great when I emailed their corporate store via the website- complaining that the ONE cart they had that was a double seater + truck in the front - was broken.... they called me and then 2 weeks later there were about 5 new truck/double carts!   Since they have gotten a few more with the big red seats in the back, too - so it's rare I can't find a cart that will fit all of my kids.

you can always go with a double stroller and just buy things that fit underneath or hang a large bag from the handle and fill that (Ikea bags work GREAT for this).  Those big carabiner clips (sold at BRU as Mommy clips- but can buy much cheaper at walmart as regular carabiner clips) are great for hooking on bags for shopping.

you can do the push and pull - pushing your stroller and pulling a cart behind you- when you need to buy a lot of stuff... It's rare I do this since it's rare I can actually shop for a LOT of stuff with the kids - i usually only do the push and pull when I am buying something really big - like at Target.

i was never good at wearing a baby either - it hurt my back to do it for very long in a store.

when they are small you can also put 2 in a one-seater shopping cart by bending their inside legs and putting their outer leg through a hole each - so they are sort of turned towards each other - this worked until my boys were about 12mo.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

I love my Ergo!!  I'm getting ready to go out now and I'll put one in the cart and the second will ride on my back.  I can wear one (they are in the 25-30 lb range) for quite a while without feeling it.

  • I've done it a couple ways:

    - push the double stroller and pull the shopping cart - I do it this way for large grocery shopping trips.

    - push the double stroller and carry a large shopping bag or basket for groceries

    - wear one on my back in Ergo and have one sit in the cart

    - I complained to my local Publix about their lack of carts for families with more than one child. They purchased some double seaters.

    - One sits in the front seat and one sits in a booster seat in the large part of the shopping cart. It's a cheap, simple booster that I can buckle onto the back of the cart and then buckle LO into the seat so she doesn't stand. I put some groceries in the large part near her and in baskets underneath the shopping cart. Before the booster, I used the infant seat in the large part of the basket. LO may be too big for it to be safe in the car, but it's fine for grocery shopping!

  • I just have to say it never crossed my mind to call the store and ask them to buy carts for me. And I LOVE that they actually listen!!! I have said to DH many times, that this would be so much easier if all the grocery stores had those carts with the little cars in front....or any 2 seater situation. I believe I have some calls to make!
  • I couldn't carry my son in a Bjorn past 4 months.  A beco or Ergo have WAY better support and are comfortable with much heavier kids.

That's all I've got. I've been thinking about this too.

  • i've put the boys in a single cart, roman gets his legs in both leg holes and Aiden since he's lighter and super flexible, has his leg in the outer hole and then has his other leg crossed across his lap.  Still works and Aiden is around 22 lbs.

  • I'll usually push one cart and pull another.. and then make comments to employees who comment like "well SOME stores have ones that have TWO seats... those are the stores I USUALLY GO TO because they ROCK"
