Baby Names

So.. whats so wrong with Nevaeh?

I'm kinda new here, and have been lurking for awhile.. and I get the strong impression that Nevaeh is highly unliked.  My niece is a Nevaeh, and I haven't heard of any others ever around here (granted, we are the midwest and pretty slow to trends).  I wasn't a huge fan of it at first, but of course I love my adorable niece to death, so its grown on me.. but in all the post I've gone through, I can't figure out why its so universally horrible.  What am I missing?  Too trendy?  To different?  Too "made-up"?

Re: So.. whats so wrong with Nevaeh?

  • IMO it's the whole "it's heaven spelled backwards" thing. Just seems kind of made up/tacky or something. But, I've only met 1 Nevaeh and I can see how it would just grow on a girl.

  • All of the above.  Plus, it's just kind of a silly way to name a child... using a word spelled backwards is kind of dumb, IMO.

  • I do not wish to insult your family, or your niece, but you asked...the name is ridiculous. It's not even a name. It is a word spelled backwards.

I'm in the midwest as well, and don't know a single Nevaeh.  I don't think that it's that we're slow to catch on, I think people in the midwest are more practical and less likely to go with something so over-the-top.  jmo.

  • I agree with all of the PPs.  It's pretentious, made-up, and ridiculous.
  • It is tacky.  And stripper-esque.  And also tacky.

Heaven is a noun. So it's like naming your child a random noun and spelling it backwards.

  • I think it has become even more "trendy" after one of the 16&Pregnant girls used it for her daughter.  I have heard it a LOT since then and always find it to be irritating.

  • I feel like people who use the name Nevaeh think it's really clever, which is completely grating. And I despise made up names. And, while I really like religious names, Nevaeh just feels like a cheap way to shout out that you're a spiritual person. It has no real meaning beyond "this word spelled backwards kind of sounds like a name".

  • Well here comes the one person who seems to like it lol.

I have met a few nevaeh (who were not strippers) and I thought it was a cute name, Yes its made up and its a word that is backwards but I have noticed the trend with baby names right is is putting two names together, or naming kids after places (asia, paris, egypt, brooklyn, berlin, london) So I dont think naming your kid heaven and flipping it backwards is tacky or stupid.

    -Egypt :)

  • Naming a child after a place is one thing(i dont like that either) BUT spelling it backwards is completely stupid.

It isnt cute, special, or unique. it makes the parent look like 16 year olds who are not  educated.

People can try and rationalize it all they want...stupid is stupid.

I don't know what trend you're speaking about? Since the top "trendiest" (read: top 5 on the SS list) names right now are Isabella, Sophia, Emma, Olivia, and Ava. None of those are two name names or place names.

Yes, many celebrities have named their children after places (Alicia Keys: Egypt, Gwen Stefani: Kingston, Mariah Carrey: Morocco, Victoria Beckham: Brooklyn, Ashlee Simpson: Bronx) but I wouldn't say that those celebrities have started a "trend" among the everyday people.

Personally I just really hate the sound of it. I do not think it's a pretty name at all. The heaven spelling backwards thing is kind of cheesy but I could probably get over it if the name was beautiful sounding. Nevaeh sounds forced and if you really wanted to name your child that I would think it would be spelled differently. It looks and sounds odd to me as a name.
  • I just think Nevaeh is tacky.  Like PP said, if you want it, just name her Heaven.  That's almost more acceptable.

  • I get it.

This probably makes them sound worse, but my brother picked it out because he thought it sounded pretty.. and it was kinda a surprise when Nevaeh was three months old and someone pointed out it was heaven backwards.

No offense taken!  I'm a pretty big fan of traditional names as well, I was just surprised that Nevaeh was the most-bashed name here.

Honestly, I think its a Bump Baby Name Board thing to hate it so much. I never had heard opposition to it until I was reading the posts on here. I don't know this show where the 16 yr old named her baby that although that would ruin it for me probably. I know a little Neva and absolutely love that name. Nevaeh isn't my style personally, but don't worry about what a bunch of strangers on a website think.

  • I love how worked up people get over this name. It's so entertaining. Can we discuss the nn D!ck now? Being named after a body part is far worse than a place, even if it's spelled backwards.

I hardly think people were using the work "d!ck" as a word for penis in medieval times. It is people's dirty mind and usage of the name/work that made it so "bad." I haven't noticed a problem with the name outside of America. Because "d!ck" is not a body part, "penis" is.

    D!CK (1)

    Gender: Masculine

    Usage: English

    Pronounced: DIK  [key]

Medieval diminutive of RICHARD. The change in the initial consonant is said to have been caused by the way the trilled Norman R was pronounced by the English.

    D!CK (2)

    Gender: Masculine

    Usage: Dutch

    Pronounced: DIK  [key]

    Diminutive of DIEDERIK

Hahaha. Yes, dirty mind. For the record, born outside of the U.S. and that's what I think every time I hear that nn. I like your explanation, never knew that.

  • I live in the Midwest and know quite a few Nevaeh's and well....here is my problem with it. I dont care that it's Heaven spelled backward, it's still dumb to me. Not even a name, its a word that some people are waaaaaay too proud of themselves for realizing this. Also, all the people I know who have named their child this are trailer trash that are high school drop outs.
  • It's trashtastic. I know a Nevaeh as well and she'a total doll and very intelligent for her age. She just has an awful name.

TBH, I'd never heard of Nevaeh until I came to thebump. I can't even begin to imagine how it's pronounced...

This (in addition to all the PPs).  It is spelled like it should be pronounced Nev-AAH-ey, but that's not how it's actually pronounced, or I assume it's not - I don't actually know any kids with this name, but it's Nev-EE-ah, right?  In which case, the only reason you're spelling it that way is because it's "heaven" backwards.

nuh-VAY-uh is how I have always heard it explained (though I have never met one).

I've met several Nevaeh's and this is how they've all been pronounced. I can't stand the name.

  • I live in the Midwest too and can say that Nevaeh is a very popular name in my area. I do not like this name for many of the same reasons others have said (the heaven spelled backwards thing is pretentious, just call your child "Heaven" and be done with it), but want to add that I especially hate the name when people change the spelling (for example, Neveyah).

Then, you are taking a made-up, silly name and completely wrecking the only identifying piece from it. At this point, why not just throw a bunch of scrabble pieces at the wall and be done with it?

When I hear the name, I immediately assume that the family is not college educated, most likely not married to the baby's father, and from a low socioeconomic background.

    Just my honest opinion.

I also moved from the east coast to the midwest and I've noticed it to be about equal. About half the people I know have kids with normal names and the other half have made-up names/spellings.

Anyway, I think Nevaeh is a stupid "name" as well.

  • I would think Neve would have been a better name, I always thought Neve Campbell's name was interesting. It means snow (or brightness). Nevaeh would never be my choice, but to each its own.
  • My problem with this name is that a name should just be a name, there shouldn't be a definition/explanation that comes with it every time you introduce your child to someone.

It's always, "Hi this is my daughter Nevaeh, which is heaven spelled backwards."

The explanation doesn't give your horrible name any more legitimacy, it's just as awful as if it didn't have one.

  • I don't really have a problem with it.  I have always said it "Neva" in my head, but then I have never met a Nevaeh in person, so I could be wrong.  It always falls in the category of Tiffany, Porsche, and other "luxury" names to me.  It's not quite as bad as Rolexus, but it does habe wanna-be aspirations to me.

  • 9 out of 10 baby girls on Jerry Springer are named Nevaeh (or Neveah, which IMO is worse)... ok, maybe not 9 out of 10, maybe 8 out of 10... but still...
  • My SIL named her daughter Nevaeh. When I first started dating DH I was definitely jaded to the name because of the bump. She is definitely one of the most darling little girls you have ever met and I feel bad for her because of her name. It doesn't even have a decent nickname. SIL was like 30 when she had her so no teen mom either.

  • In addition to many of the pp's opinions (tacky, cheesy, assuming immature parents), it also really bothers me that it is a nice word that is now backwards.  Wouldn't that make the meaning the opposite of the original word?  I always think the child is some sort of demon since it's heaven BACKWARDS, you know?
