Transition from Co-Sleeping to Crib Sleeping

DH and I have been going back and forth on when to transition DS from our bed to DS's crib/own bed and also when to wean.  I told him that I don't think DS nor I am ready for weaning.  It is still too much of a comfort source for DS, plus I think he still needs to nurse for nutrition (he has been slow to take to solids).  So, I've delayed that discussion for now.

But, that brings us to the transition from co-sleeping to a crib.  DH thinks I'm "holding DS back" from growing up by keeping him in bed with me.  I'm not completely opposed to moving DS to his own bed, but I'm just wondering how he will adjust.  Is it cruel to suddenly just put him in crib after he's slept with me for a year and a half?  What is the best way to transition him?  For others who have done this, at what age did you transition your LO to their own bed?  TIA!

Re: Transition from Co-Sleeping to Crib Sleeping

  • Sorry, I have nothing to add, but I am in the same position. We are ready/not quite ready to make this transition as well and are not sure how to do it, as we are still breastfeeding as well and DD has slept in our bed for so long.

  • Have you read The No Cry Solution? I think it would help you a lot. We still bedshare due to frequent night awakenings. But you could do a slow transition. Could you put the crib in your bedroom? You could start in the crib and end in the bed. Then slowly move the crib farther from you until it is in the nursery and lengthen the time he is in the crib vs bed.

  • We did it at 1 - although DS always slept in his crib part of the night and bedshared the other part.  At around 13 months I night-weaned him using that Jay Gordon method (well, kind of...) and he started STTN.  Once he STTN he just stayed in his crib vs. bringing him into our bed when he woke up.  It took him a week to adjust.
