Can a middle name honor two people (re-post from Sept)

I'm still at a loss for first names, so it may be a little too early for this question, but can a middle name honor two people. SO and I were talking about using the name Carolina for my grandmother (Carol Elizabeth) and my great-aunt (Ina Rose). My grandmother raised me, and my Aunt Ina was extremely important to me while growing up.

So, is this cheesy? Does it work? Is it okay to honor two people with one name? Will they feel cheated? Also, for pronunciation: do you like Car-oh-leen-ah or Car-oh-line-ah? (My aunt has had her name pronounced both ways--she typically goes for the long "I" pronunciation, but the generations of our family that still spoke Swedish would use the other.)

Re: Can a middle name honor two people (re-post from Sept)

  • I like it. Carol-ina works. There are so many instances where combining names does NOT work that most people should not do it. I love Carolina.

My Aunt is named after 2 uncles and 1 aunt: Ron, Ella and Jene so her name is Ronella Jene, she hates it.

  • I love Carolina! But I think it would pronounce it like the state. But most probably would pronounce it the other way.

  • I was thinking of doing something similar (using Christiane as a middle name after both our moms, Christina and Diane). I haven't decided if it's cheesy or not yet-- maybe a little, but in your case the two names come together to form a nice, legitimate name, so I like it. My first instinct was actually CaroLEENa, but I think most people would pronounce it like the states, because of the states.
  • This is a rare time it works, IMO.
Smooshing two names rarely works.. but Carolina is lovely AND a name!

  • My daughters middle name is Faye. My DH's maternal grandmother's first name is Faye and my paternal grandmothers middle name is Fay. It honored them both and they were thrilled for Abigail to have their name.

    I like Caroleenah for pronunciation.

  • I like it! Not cheesy at all.

I think the pronunciation would depend on the first name. It just depends on what flows better!

Meh, I think it sounds like your naming after a place (South/North Carolina). I would find a different combination if it were me, like Elizabeth Rose.

  • I think it works great! A name can honor 2 people. DD's middle name is Brielle.(pronounced bree-elle) My sisters middle name is Brianna, and DH's sister's middle name is Noelle. We combined them. That way nobody had any hurt feelings.

  • In this case it really works. I don't like contrived smoosh names, but this is actually a real name, and a very pretty one at that!

I would go with Car-oh-line-ah, because that's what people are most familiar with (think North Carolina, South Carolina). Telling people to pronouce it another way would seem odd.

  • I think in this case it works...Carolina is very pretty!

  • You rarely see names to honor two family members go so perfectly to make a name. Lucky you.
