talk to me about permenant birth control (vasectomy)

We figured we'd be done at 2 kids. Now with our surprise twins, we'll be having 3 and I think that will be the end of our procreating :)

I've been considering what the best option for us would be though. One of those long term birth control options, or a vasectomy for DH?

I have been on bc pills since I was about 19 (other than when TTC or pregnant) so I am wondering if there will be pro/cons to choosing a long term option for me or going off all together.

And as far as vasectomy -- I was wondering if we should go ahead now, what the recovery is like, etc..

Feel free to chime in with stories, things to consider, etc.. this is all new to me!

  • Lurking. Google "Essure". It's a permanent birth control method for women - a non-surgical "tying of the tubes", so to speak.

  • My H got a vas after the twins were born.  He was sore for two or three days and that's it.

    Congrats on being a MoM!

was it long after they were born? I was thinking maybe he could do it when he's home for the 2 weeks following the girls being born. but then someone said that guys basically have to sit and do nothing for like 3 days, which will not work out well with twinfants and a toddler!

  • We were going to get a vasectomy when the girls were about 3 months old.  DH had the appt and everything but we did not go through with it at the last minute.  I have mirena right now and in 2 years when we are 100% sure (we are about 99.9% right now) we'll have the vasectomy done.
  • Side note...

If your DH and you decide to go the vasectomy route, don't mess around with him going in to get 'checked' to make sure he is sterile.

I know 2 people who did not want to have to go put there 'stuff' in a cup and wound up pregnant again!!

  • DH got his vasectomy when the boys were almost 3 months old. We knew as soon as we found out it was twins that he would have it done.

We had my mom lined up to stay the whole weekend he got it done on a Friday, but he was fine by Staurday night just a little sore. Friday he was unable to do anything but hold frozen peas on himself but by Saturday I could hand him babies to hold he just couldnt lift them out of crib, swings.

  • Funny you posted this today, my twins are 10 weeks old today and hubby got one yesterday. It took them about a half hr, he was in recovery a half hour and when I went back he was awake and numb. They gave him what the dr. Called a penile block. I guess it is a 12 hr pain block. He said he felt numb but we stopped on the way home at meijer to fill his prescription and he walked around with me and wanted to get a few things! A few hours after he said he could feel it and it hurt. He took some percocets and slept for 4 hrs or so. He then let me go to bed and fed the babies when they got up. He seems fine today. He said it hurts but is bearable. He is actually cooking dinner right now! Amazes me.

  • DH got his vasectomy before the twins were born.  He sat around on frozen peas the same day, and was back to normal the following day.

Definitely make sure he follows through with the samples, as PP mentioned.  It took DH 6 months to have a clean sample, so we used condoms until then (you know, when we actually had sex, which wasn't at all before they were born and not for a bit afterwards, either).

  • I know 1000% that I'm done with two.  DH claims he's 99.9% sure, but that may just be a stall tactic before he gets a vasectomy. I got Mirena put in and told him he has exactly 5 years to get used to the idea of getting snipped. Big Smile

The IUD insert was painful and (TMI, sorry) messy, but it's been just fine ever since.  I'd never, ever go back on the pill.

  • Mirena is not an option for me due to history of ectopic pregnancy. I would get my tubes tied if I require c-section, but our hospital doesn't allow it due to religious affiliation... So - DH will get a vasectomy. We have not decided the ideal timing yet. I did not ovulate or get AF while BFing DS (until he was 19 months) so that gives us a little wiggle room. We'll probably schedule once the twins are home with us :)

  • Having a V was NOT an option for DH ("uh yeah, nothing's getting snipped down there"...LOL). So when I had my section, I just had my tubes tied. And then about a yr later, I had an endometrial ablation done, so there's absolutely NO way I could get preg now, even if I wanted to.
