Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Juice, when and how did you introduce

When did you start juice? I know it is listed as an ok on the sheet from our pedi as long as its a snack and not replacing formula. Just wondering if you have- what time of day? how much? any diluting? Thanks.

Re: Juice, when and how did you introduce

  • My pedi recommended not starting it until 1 or 2 years old bc she isn't a fan of sugar...but she did say that if DD was constipated we could give her some--2 ounces juice with 2 ounces water.  Always in a sippy - never in a bottle (I think just so that it isn't seen as "replacing" formula/bm).

  • I've given pear juice diluted once for constipation. I don't plan on giving it for a snack or anything until she's at least 1 and it'll be very minimal. I want her to prefer milk and water to juice.

  • We actually just now started with juice, but diluted.  I make a sippy cup up with half juice and half water (about 4 oz. total) and let her sip it with her meals and snacks only and then keep it out of sight the rest of the day.  She also has been taking her formula out of a sippy for the last couple of months and there's no confusion for her since she only gets water/juice at meals...she still loves her formula!

  • I have no plan to for a while. It really doesn't offer much in terms of nutrition and is full of sugar. LO gets enough sugar from fruit purees now, which I still dilute with BM. Juice will wait until she's a toddler and will still be diluted and an occasional treat.
  • We aren't. I don't plan to have him drink juice until he's in school and I have no control over it anymore.

It won't be in our house, it just has way too much sugar.

The only way I can see giving it would be when he's older and give him 1 frozen ice cube of juice per 8 oz of water.

    My pedi is anti-juice.

This is a good reason to give juice this young, IMO! Yes

  • DS occasionally has juice to help him when he's a little constipated. But no more than once or twice a month, and it's the low-sugar version. I don't plan on giving juice to DD unless she would need it for the same reason, which she currently doesn't.

  • My DD's surgeon had us start her on prune juice to coincide with the start of formula and solids. I bought the organic stuff, not sure if it makes any difference, but that's all I could find! He didn't give any instruction on it... I ended up diluting 15 mL (half an ounce) into 50 mL of water (just shy of two ounces). It worked a little too well! So I may reduce that amount to 10 mL next time.

ETA: I don't like the idea of juice so early either, but it's imperative for DD to stay regular after her surgery. I don't think prune juice will make her a sugar fiend though (that stuff smells NASTY).

    STM due Feb. 2017!

Same. He's only had it once for constipation.

  • I have never given my DD juice and don't plan on it for a very long time.
  • I won't be doing juice for a long time either. My DS didn't get juice until he was about 2 years old, and it was 50/50 juice/water, and never very often.

I can honestly say he never asks for juice, even now at almost 7 years old. He prefers milk or water, actually he would drink only water but I give him 1% milk with dinner.

  • There is no reason to give juice.

I just started giving my 2.5 year old diluted orange juice. I don't think babies need it at all.

  • One year, unless needed for constipation. There is a lot of high blood pressure on DH's (DH had to go on meds for it at 24) side so for the most part we are trying to have a low sodium, low sugar household. I want my kiddo and future kiddos to actually like water and milk and not go to sugary substances automatically.

  • We are not doing juice because it has a lot of calories and very little nutrition. We would give it to treat constipation or something but not as a regular part of DD's diet.
  • Eh, I don't really see what the big deal is.

Everyone acts like juice is horrible, but I think as long as it is 100% fruit juice without added sugar, it is fine to offer occasionally.

We haven't given DD any yet because she isn't very efficient with a sippy cup, but I probably will give diluted juice before she is a year old.

I certainly would never let it replace BM or formula. Nor do I think they should have a cup of juice all day long, but one diluted cup a day is fine IMO.

  • DS loves drinking water, so we are not going to introduce juice until he asks for it!
