question about eggs

My favorite way to eat my eggs is with the yolks runny, but I have been eating them hard cooked because I wasn't sure if runny yolks were okay or not? I was going to ask my doctor at my last appointment, but of course I forgot! So, I thought I'd see what your thoughts are. TIA!

Re: question about eggs

  • You should eat them fully cooked during pregnancy.

Okay thanks! Now I just have to figure out how to get the yolks cooked all the way without getting the whites over cooked like I always do. I've got pretty basic cooking skills lol

  • I read that you should be eating them fully cooked but I still eat them runny every now and then. Some of the "rules" they have for pregnant women are ridiculous.

  • they say not to eat them runny because of the risk of salmonella. But my thought is that if you have been making them like that for a while and have never gotten sick, you know how to cook them. I have them every now and then myself.

This is not entirely true.  If the yolk is runny, it is undercooked.  You immune system changes during pregnancy and makes you more susceptible to food borne illnesses, so just because you haven't gotten sick from them before, doesn't mean you won't now.  I agree that some of the rules are quite ridiculous, but seeing as how there was a large recall on eggs for salmonella not that long ago, I eat them fully cooked while I'm pregnant.  I do drink caffeine, eat lunch meat, etc. in moderation, but will not eat raw or undercooked food for now.  But do whatever you are comfortable with.

To cook the egg, crack it in the pan and then break the yolk, everything should cook at the same rate and not be overcooked. Good luck.

Like I said just my thought. I don't eat lunchmeat because it can have bacteria as well and since it's not handled well and touched by different people I feel it's best to stay away away from it. Everyone has their choices.

  • What to Expect says eat them fully cooked.  I've been eating over hard even though I like them runny too!

I had runny eggs a few times in my first pregnancy before I knew you weren't supposed to do that.  It's okay- What to Expect always says, don't worry about what you ate before, just don't do it going forward.

scramble them... they'll taste better than having hard cooked egg whites with a hard yolk.  Or you can make hard boiled eggs.

You can also make what I call "scram-letes".  They're basically scrambled omelets that are easier to make because you don't have to worry about flipping a flat egg.  :)  I just add everything that I want in a cup (like cheese, avocado, onion, tomato, green chili) with the raw egg.  Scramble them up with a fork then pour them onto a hot pan to cook.  Yum!

  • Factory farm eggs (the kind you find at most grocery stores) are 5x more likely to have salmonella than organic farm fresh eggs. If I'm eating at a restaurant or at someone's house where I don't know anything about the eggs, I get them over hard. For home, however, I buy pastured organic eggs and have been eating them runny. It's up to you, but if you're looking to eat runny eggs with less risk, you might try that option.

  • This is my first pregnancy, so I wondered as well.  My Dr. told me that as long as the whites are cooked it is ok for the yolks to be runny.  I am sure everybody has their own thoughts on it!  I do mine scrambled most of the time, but every now and then I'll do them over easy!!!  Good luck!!

I am definitely going to have to make that! Sounds delicious!

  • If you can, opt for "Pasteurized Eggs" if you're planning to eat them runny.

That said, I still eat mine cooked yet runny...

  • I like them over easy too. My thought is not so much the built up immunity but you have to trust where you get them. I still eat them that way sometimes as well. I just can't live in a bubble all the time.

  • I don't eat them runny...but I am kind of a nerd about following all of those "rules" to a T. I think I am going to eat a runny yolk egg and toast every morning for about six months after I have this baby!

Ha ha.  This.  I agree.  People think I'm crazy but I'm a total dork about following the rules.  I have ONE cup of coffee (small cup) in the mornings and that's about as far as I go in breaking the rules.  The only reason I do that is because my doctor actually told me to, because I drank SO much coffee before conceiving she thought that I would be getting horrible headaches if I just stopped.  However, I don't eat lunch meat, don't drink alcohol of any kind, don't eat raw or undercooked eggs, makes sure all of my red meat is well done, don't eat any cheeses that you aren't "supposed to," etc.  I'm a total geek about it all, but at the end of the day, it's my conscience that I have to answer to and I feel good.

As for the runny eggs thing, I would scramble them or eat them over well.

  • I prefer mine runny as well, and when I got GD last pregnancy and couldn't eat carbs I decided I had to have my eggs the way I wanted. If you can find them, you can eat pasteurized eggs anyway you prefer. You just have to do some looking around at the supermarket and make sure you get the pasteurized ones.
  • My doctor didn't hesitate a second when I asked him. He said I can definitely have them as long as the whites are cooked thoroughly which heats up the yolk enough. I haven't thought about it again at all and have eaten them almost every morning this whole 20 weeks. But it truly is what you feel comfortable with and what you and your doctor have discussed. Just remembered that research as to whether or not something is safe can change on a daily basis so your doctor is your most reliable source not a book. That said every doctor can say different things too. So who knows!
