anyone wait to ttc due to nursing lo #1?

I understand that tandem nursing and nursing through a pregnancy is possible, but how did you handle going to the hospital and being away from lo #1 at that time?  My lo is still nursing on demand for food/comfort and I cannot imagine being away from him for days without nursing.

  • You mean when you give birth? I'll be at the birth center for less than 12 hours (and more likely 4-6 hours), so DD will be fine, nursing-wise. And for my hospital birth, we were released after 24 hours but allowed visitors. What makes you think you'll be away from DC1 for days?

I was TTC since DS was 6 months, so wasn't worried about what would happen if baby#2 came along before he was weaned.  When I finally got pregnant with #2, DS was about 16 months.  My doc said I should wean at by the time I was 20 weeks.  But I kept getting mastitis and was planning a slow wean so DS could comfort nurse just 1-2 times a day.  When he was about 19 months, he eneded up just weaning completely.  I guess since I was saying no, he figured it meant no completely!  So by the time you have your next one, your LO may be ready to wean completely.  Or he may be comfort nursing just a couple of times a day and will be ok with you not being there.  I would just make sure that he has other means of comfort, falling asleep if that is when he nurses.  GL!

  • I have the same concerns. I'd prefer not to nurse while PG and tandem nurse all night long. I could handle once or twice a day, but DS is still waking frequently throughout the night due to teething. I'm also concerned about being away from him for two nights in a row while at the hospital. We're not quite ready to TTC #2, so it's not really an issue yet, but it is on my mind. I read somewhere that BM changes back to colostrum around 16 weeks of pregnancy, and kids often wean on their own because they don't like the taste of it. Not sure if there's any truth to that.

  • It's not our only reason, but it's among them. I just don't want to nurse two at the same time.

  • That's our main reason for waiting before TTC #3. I did nurse through a pregnancy and tandem nurse with #1, but it was hard and stressful and not something I'd like to repeat again if I can help it. I'd be okay with getting pregnant after LO#2 is a year old, so at least I wouldn't have to worry about supplementing with formula. As far s the hospital stay goes, I was in the hospital for 48 hours PP and I saw DD both of those days. She didn't even mention nursing during that time, so we didn't. When we got home we just picked up where we left off. That was a huge concern of mine, but it was much easier than I thought it would be.
