Tip Etiquette ?

If you hire someone that works for themselves...do you tip them?  I personally wouldn't think so- the profit it all theirs to begin with right?!

  • Depends on waht it's for.  A massage, yes.  Gardening, yardwork, construction, no.

This is what I was thinking as well.

But I do holiday bonuses for cleaning lady and dog walker and such.  Just no weekly tips.

We might be getting a server for our party next week- she works for herself and charges 20/hour- why would I tip her if she takes it all home anyway??

  • I think, for us, it depends on what the job is and what type of business the person has.  A person who is a sole proprietor I might tip or give a gift card to, but not a company with employees and such.

  • Not if the person is the owner, as she sets her own prices.  If it was someone working for the owner, I would.

In this situation I would still tip her if she goes above and beyond what is asked.

This, a tip is just that, extra for doing a great job. if she does tip her, if she does exactly what she's supposed to do, not one ounce more, and has a snarl on her face the whole time? Then no tip!

  • We hired a bartender for a party and he did a great job so we did tip him on top of his hourly charge.  Also, I know a few of our guests tipped him as they were getting drinks as well.  I agree with the other girls.  If the server does a great job I'd give a little extra.
