VBAC vs. scheduled C-section - WWYD?

I know this is entirely my decision, but I need to bounce ideas off someone.

I had a c-section with DS after pushing 3 hours - he was backward and stuck on my pelvis so he kept coming down then going back up again. I wasn't given other options - no foreceps/episiotomy.

This time I can either do scheduled c-section or VBAC. As far as I know, it wouldn't make much difference to the safety of the baby (according to my midwife), so it's all about me.

With a VBAC, I'd get to do it "naturally" (I was really upset about not being able to 1st time round - like crying every day for months, couldn't talk about it for a long time without getting emotional). I imagine recovery would also be easier.

With a c-section, I could plan it, so my Mom would be able to help with DS and LO#2 (we have no friends/family nearby - she would fly in from UK). I'd also avoid putting DH through the trauma of labor (he didn't want more kids just because the whole thing was so traumatic last time) - he would prob be more open to having a 3rd child if we avoided labor. Recovery would be worse, but probably not as bad as recovery from hours of labor plus a c-section.

I'm torn right now. WWYD?

Re: VBAC vs. scheduled C-section - WWYD?

  • When I was pregnant with DS, his head wasn't dropping and I ended up with a c/s. With DD last year, I did my VBAC and wouldn't have it any other way. The recovery was way easier too. I understand your concerns about your DH but if you were crying about it for so long, I think you should be thinking about you first. I was in the same boat as you, I cried for years (actually until I did my VBAC). You can ask your Dr to do a TOL for a set amount of hours and if it doesn't seem like you dont want to continue after that amount of time then you can ask for the c/section. GL with whatever you decide mama.

  • I had such a great experience with my c-section, I am just going to plan another one, but to each their own.  GOOD LUCK!

THIS! I will also add that I am a control freak so the fact that I can basically plan everything out (unless I go into spontaneous labor) and have everything ready for when LO arrives and that the child I already have will be taken care of without worrying is another reason why I'm getting another.

You need to do whats best for you and if you think that you will have regrets maybe you should try for a VBAC. PPD is not joke and you don't want to add to that with regrets about how LO got here.

  • Since your original C-section disappointed you so much, I would definitely try to do your Natural VBAC. It seems that you would definitely qualify since your first would have been able to if not turned wrong. Recovery would be so much easier and that is always a major consideration for me.

  • I had to have an emergency c-section with DD because she was breached, but my doctor said that I am a perfect candidate for a VBAC, so that is my plan.  I ended up laboring at home and didn't get to the hospital until I was dilated to a 10 (stupid on call doctor's fault for making me wait so long), so I have no doubt I can do it naturally.

  • I would try the VBAC that way you can experience it, since it was upsetting not to have done it the first time. Go in it thinking VBAC and be okay with the idea of C-section if it would come to it. That way you are prepared for both options.

  • I had no choice but a c-section, medical reasons. We had it planned for months before. I loved it, it was an easy recovery and I would not want to go through all the pain of natural since I know that a c-section is not that bad.

  • I'm in the same boat. After discussing it with DH and my OB we decided to try for a VBAC provided I go into labor on my own before my due date. She said we'll likely schedule a c-section on or just past my due date just in case because she said she doesn't want to have to induce me or use pitocin b/c of the prior c-section. We'll also do a growth ultrasound late in the game to get an estimate of size to check the likelihood of my being able have a VBAC. I'm really hoping that I go into labor on my own and deliver successfully this time. Good luck with your decision, it's a personal one so do whatever works for you and your family.

Please dont think I'm trying to talk you into or out of anything, just a question because I know what may be right for me may not be for you. Are you comfortable with a c section at your due date if a growth u/s is done and the baby is fine and "small"? I'm only asking because I had my VBAC last year and I went into labor on my own at 42 weeks but I had a BPP done every other day at 40 weeks up to 42.

  • Only you can decide what's best for you. If you want to go for VBAC I would still be prepared for the c-section. Having a c-section doesn't make you any less of a mama to your precious little one!! Best wishes.

] This is my plan, my doctor is supportive.
