Childcare asked me to see a Neurologist for LO

I love our daycare, they provide food, formula, early intervention, it is just a wonderful DC, but yesterday the coordinator called me into his office to talk about Pablito's hand and arm movements.

He says that due to LO being premature (he was born at 34 weeks) he could have some delay, so he wants me to take him to a neurologist, what should I expect? he is on track with everything else, I always thought he was just a lazy boy when holding things, but now its a concern. He is sitting, he already says mama dada baba etc, he responds to his name, he is a very social little boy always smiling to everyone, he even tries to interact with other babies, and this may sound dumb but I sometimes think he wants to make friends and play with other kids, because whenever he sees other kids playing he stares at them and gets all exited... Should I be worried? what is your experience?

Thanks

I think your LO sounds like he's doing amazingly well.  Sure he may be delayed with holding things and of course you should get that checked out but I'm impressed with everything else he's doing.

FWIW, my LO just had his first appt with Early Intervention and they check him out to make sure he's doing the right things for his adjusted age.  If there is a delay, they do therapy or other things to get him back on track.

I imagine the neuro will be a similar experience.  Basically they play with the baby and see how the baby reacts to normal things - does he reach for a toy, track your movements with his eyes, turn towards sounds, respond to his name - those sorts of things.

They pushed my son on some areas to see what he could tolerate.  For example, tummy time.  And they did certain stretches with him to see how flexible he is and to teach us how to do the same stretches at home.

Again, I think your son sounds like he's doing well so I wouldn't be worried.

First off, has your pediatrician expressed any concerns?  Is your son seen by EI?  Have they expressed concerns?  If not, I wouldn't jump right to a neurologist.  Sure the dc coordinator sees lots of children but they aren't specialists.  Talk to your pedi about the movements.  Sounds like your son is doing awesome to me. Good luck.  Also, you might have better luck with this question on the Special Needs Board.

I would def consider their concerns and get a 2nd opinion. Hopefully they are off base, but if they noticed something and pointed it out to you, I'd want to look into it.  Andrew goes to a school that has a special program for kids with delays and therapy, and they don't seem to even notice things that his therapists notice, so if they did I'd especially be concerned!

    I hope everything is oK!

I dont' consider my DS preemie but any means...he was born at 36 wks and was a healthy weight.  However, he sounds a lot like your DS.  Has your peds doctor expressed any concern?  Are there specific examples the director is concerned about?
