DH just doesn't get it sometimes (vent)

Arg! I am so frusterated I could scream right now. DH just doesn't get why I am so cautious around anything that has chemicals or pesticides in it right now. I switched all of our cleaning products to green products, and I don't use anything that has harsh chemicals or smells. He doesn't seem to get why I am so worried about this though. Today he sprayed the yard for bugs (in particular fleas as they are bad up here right now) and I said to water the yard tomorrow night to rinse off any residue. He started arguing that since he applied it using the hose it didn't need to be rinsed off after it rained. I said I didn't want anyone tracking that stuff into the house no matter what. Also, our dog had fleas and we have been trying to get that cleaned up for a couple of weeks. He just wants to use powders, sprays, and bombs but I told him no because I'm pregnant. He has been pouty about having to vacuum the floor every day and use the carpet scrubber. He says it would have been easier his way.

Am I being unreasonable by not wanting any of that stuff in our house? DH isn't very clean by nature so me making him go the extra mile instead of doing everything half a$$ed is irritating him.

  • Once it is dry is isn't harmful. We have bugs here pretty bad in this heat including lots of hornets and we had to have our landlord hire someone to come spray around the house, the deck and the yard. The bug guy had kids and said just wait until its dry to go out or for our kids to go out, but once it has been 24hrs it's totally safe.

  • The chemicals may be bad but you know what's worse?  Catching a disease from fleas.  You're overreacting.

Or any other type of bug. If you are extremely worried, compromise. Bomb the house, and tell him to take you out for a nice meal and baby window shopping(or real shopping) while your home is bombed and airs out. Once it's aired out for a few hours you'll be ok. Have DH vacuum as soon as you get home.

  • Just an FYI, as a research chemist who makes pesticide products, an area treated with a liquid insecticide product applied (or a granular product applied and then watered in) is safe to reenter once the area has dried.  Watering the lawn the next day won't do anything... most products are "rain-safe" after a certain amount of time so they will have started working already or the water simply won't wash them off.  I would be more worried about disease-carrying ticks getting from the dog to you then residual insecticide that is applied at using the instructions.  Pesticide products are more regulated then the prenatal vitamins we take.

Sorry, just my opinion on that specific topic... but I do agree that it is your decision to make and he should respect your concerns because it is your body.

  • Well, I guess I'm the only one but I'm with you.  I'm sure there will be many who disagree with me but the fact of the matter is that a lot of things we are told  are "safe" turn out not always to be exactly that.

4 ml of Motrin sent my one of my twin girls into a nearly-fatal spiral of hemolytic anemia that required 4 blood transfusions, a week of intensive care,  3 weeks total of hospitalization and 2 years of follow-up testing.  Both of my girls now wear medical id bracelets stating NO IBUPROFEN.  DD had taken Motrin before with no ill effects, so how can that be explained?

The truth is, there is no free lunch.  Yes, insects can cause diseases but the prevention may also cause problems.  Go with your gut and do what is right for you.
