Is boating safe while pregnant?

Does anyone know if it is safe to go out on a boat while pregnant?  I'm 16 weeks along with twins and my mom's fiance has a boat that I love going out on.  Is it safe to be out on the boat going over the waves??  The boat bounces around while going over the waves which worries me a little.

Re: Is boating safe while pregnant?

  • My family has a boat as well and I've been out on it this summer. My one suggestion is to stand when they are driving fast and going over waves so that you can receive the impact with you legs as opposed to sitting and bouncing around. I felt much better standing and being able to bend my knees every time we went over a wave. Hope this helps!

  • I was just out on a pontoon last weekend. Unless you're in a small boat sitting up front, or a wave runner (Both Smacking against rough waves) you probably would be fine. Ask the doc if you're really concerned but any jarring motion is what you don't want.

  • You could also suggest that he avoid the huge waves where possible and maybe go a bit more slowly if you're concerned.

  • I agree with all the other posts.  We took a catamaran our while on vacation, and I had no trouble.  You just don't want to be bounced around too much, or take the bumps so you are being thrown/bumped around.  My Dr. OK'd me going boating as long as I understood that.

  • I just went boating this past weekend, and had a blast! I did have to skip out on the tubing but had fun anyways!

  • My doctor just told me yesterday it was fine on two conditions:

    A) I don't fall out of the boat

    B) I restrain from being on a jet ski, water skiing, tubing, etc. Again, anything where you can fall.

LOL I feel like my doctor thinks I'm accident prone :P

  • I would say yes and it's fabulous.  Myself, my aunt, my sis's friend, all spent lots of time on a boat while pregnant.  Mostly pantoon boats, but some speed boats.  Actually when I was like 2 weeks overdue, my mom took me out on the speed boat for a "bumpy" ride...we were trying to induce labor...but LO stuck.
  • I am in the Coast Guard and my job is working on a boat. Our policy is only up to 20 weeks is it considered safe. I was even allowed to go out on a jetski as long as I didn't do anything crazy that involved me getting thrown off. My OB also agrees with that unless there is any issues.

The big issue with being on a boat is if the boat does something you don't expect and you take a fall (whether on the boat or into water). I've seen all the time in my job.

To be safe you could always call your OB. I don't know if they risks are higher with twins on a boat.

  • Absolutely. We've had boats since before I had #1 and I'm now 23 weeks w/ #3. If the water is choppy, then the boat may need to slow down, but that's all.
  • My dad has a boat, so this was one of my first pg questions - my OB said it was fine as long as I ride in the back half (the boat has an open bow, and you really bounce up there).  enjoy it!  I love being out in the fresh air.

  • As long as there isn't too much hard bouncing over waves. My OB told me to picture holding a newborn on your lap and if you would feel comfortable taking them for the ride then you should be ok, if you wouldn't feel comfortable having a newborn on your lap then you probably should slow down.
