Help. Milk Protien Intollerance.

So LO has had bloody stools since about two weeks old and gas and fussiness for the past two weeks. The GI specialist thinks that he has a cow and goat milk protien intollerance. So here are my questions. I know this includes the obvious dairy of milk, cheese, yougurt etc. but does this also include hidden dairy? He just said to eliminate all dairy and milk protien, breads have milk in them should I eliminate them? I found a great list of things that are milk protien and I am thinking of eliminating them all so I dont have to change my diet later if only eliminating the obvious things doesnt work. Any advice? Also, if anyone has food items they know of that I can have such as a specialty ice cream or bread that would be great. This is all completly new to me and I dont have a clue what to do. Thanks.

Re: Help. Milk Protien Intollerance.

  • Some kiddie will do ok with milk that is in baked goods but not with the rest. I would try eliminating obvious milk/dairy products first & give it a few weeks & see how LO does. If he's still symptomatic then cut all dairy altogether. There are lots of great milk alternatives. We give DS soy or coconut milk yogurt, rice milk ice cream & cheese. We use the brand Ener-G bread, they have many different dairy free options but are also GF & egg free so they definitely don't taste like regular bread. Good luck, there are lots of DF options out there.

  • like pp said, some kids are ok w/ hidden and others arent. If there is blood in the stool than her reaction is pretty severe and i would avoid hidden also.

Did he say anything about soy?  if her blood continues, make sure you avoid soy also.

If you're only going dairy free than there are many options, but if you are also including soy free than i'll list some great ideas below.

Here is a good link about avoiding dairy and hidden dairy (casein, whey..) https://web.mit.edu/kevles/www/nomilk.html#badingredients

  • I assume you are nursing and asking about things you need to eliminate from your own diet. I concur with prior posts that it varies from baby to baby and even if you eliminate something from your diet, it can take up to 2 weeks for you to see an improvement in baby because 1, it will take a while for you to completely get it out of your system and breastmilk, and then, it will take a while for it to get out of baby's system.  I started off by eliminating a pretty long list of things my ped told me dd could be allergic to (including hidden sources): cow's milk, soy, chocolate, peanuts, eggs,  and shell fish (some people also include wheat and citrus on this list).  I did that for 2 solid weeks to completely "detox" and then I tried reintroducing the less likely candidates one at a time (including baked goods).  That means that for a few weeks I was basically only eating meats, fruits, veggies, coconut or rice milk, beans, lentils, and most things that were labeled as vegan.  If you are open to it, I supplemented 2 ounces a day with nutramigen just to try to dilute the effect of whatever she was getting from my breastmilk.

     hth!  good luck
