We will be in the next few weeks...thinking about the Britax Marathon for us and the Graco Myride for the grandparents (my dad will be watching her at our house three days a week soon aspnd I want him to have a seat in case of an emergency, etc.).
Had to buy one way earlier than expected b/c DH drops off and I pick up from daycare. Our daycare won't let you keep the infant carseat there and I thought it would be dumb to buy a second one, so we got a convertible instead. We got the Britax Marathon, and right now it's obviously rear facing. I really like it and DD loves it much more than her infant carseat (Graco Snugride) b/c it sits more upright.
We just put Gus in the convertible car seat this weekend. We bought my 2.5 year-old a Graco Nautilus booster seat and put Gus in his Evenflo Triumph. I was the same as you, I was so tired of lugging him around in the infant seat. Plus, he's sitting up really well so he rode in the shopping cart and sat in a restaurant high chair when we were out.
We have this one for DD. Never had a problem and she seems to like it. I plan on getting the same one for DS soon. He is getting too heavy in the infant seat.

We have a Britax Boulevard for my car and we're going to get a Cosco Scenera for H's car. We moved A over a few weeks ago because he could sit well in carts and highchairs and I was so tired of lugging him around in his infant seat!
We're Evenflo Triumph people, like Whitney DD. My parents purchased it for my niece first and DD uses it now - it's super easy to adjust and has great safety reviews, very comparable to the Britax Marathon, which is what I wanted, but we can't afford to shell out that much money for two car seats right now.
Dee,
Mommy to: Sofia, born 2/9/11, as well as three dogs, two cats and a multitude of chinchillas.
I just leave DS in his carseat just like a convertible and I take him out of it. He is too heavy for me as well. MH doesn't have a problem with it but I literally hobble around.
I will buy two convertibles when I get paid next (paid commission).

We have this:

And LOVE it. Super easy to adjust, which was the most important to us next to safety and quality.
