  • It's too "Top Gun" for me :)

  • It just reminds me of Sarah Palin.  If I'm being honest, I think it is kind of silly as a first name.

What other names are you considering?

I think it would be a fun name for a pet, but not a human. It's too gimmicky.

  • I think I agree, just can't find anything I love.

Well, we had Hudson picked out for years, but it is now out (bf used it).

Others on our list are: Ronan (FN), Holden, Sutton, Liam, Camden, Landon, Dexter, Bennett...

I also like Xavier, but don't think my husband will go for it..

  • I really don't like Maverick. Of the names on your list, I love Holden and Liam and really like Camden, Landon, and Dexter. Bennett is okay. I do not care for Sutton and Ronan (though spelled different) is a samurai without a lord to report to, so that would be out for me.

I automatically think of Sarah Palin which makes me want to lose my lunch.

It's definitely too out there for a first name.

Ditto.  It first made me think of Top Gun, but the Sarah Palin reference is worse.

  • I love it! I posted a question about that name here on the bump a couple of weeks ago, and everyone hated it. I still like it though. Yes

  • Do you feel the need.... the need for SPEED!!

Dude.  Don't do that to your kid.

  • I thought about Maverick for a boy's name and still really like the sound, meaning, etc. Also, I wasn't a part of the Top Gun era, so that reference doesn't cloud my judgment. I'm of the opinion that any Sarah Palin reference to the 2008 election will be completely inconsequential in the coming years (I mean, can you remember the catch phrases of the 1996 election? Seriously?). My point is the connotations associated with this name are quickly becoming outdated, so I feel like that is no reason to stay away from it. That being said, if you find other names that fit the bill more, go with those choices.

ETA: The name Maverick ranks like 504th in popularity. I just mean to say that Maverick isn't all that "out there" anymore.

    It's quite horrible.
  • When Tom Cruise identifies himself as Maverick in Top Gun, isn't the reply "Did your parents not like you?"

MIL has a dog named Maverick.  To me, it's not a person name; it's a little too out there.

  • When I'm choosing an attorney or a doctor, I will not go to someone named Maverick.  Sorry, I'm judgy that way.

You're naming a future adult, not a puppy.

  • honestly, i think its cheesy (very "Top Gun") i know someone who named their son Easton Maverick, and it just seems weird.  Ronan is really cool, and I really love Landon.

I also know someone that named their son Xavier Liam...and it seemed like a really strange mix to me.

  • I kind of like it but I don't think I would use it. I don't like Ronan (it's meaning) I really like Holden, Sutton, Bennett and I love Xavier and Isaac.

  • I think of Top Gun when I hear that.
  • I'm sorry, but it's terrible. Like, really terrible.

  • WAY too Top Gun - really, everyone is going to joke with him about it, and declare themselves Goose.
