Anyone every used both? Sometimes my electric one is a pain in the butt if I am nursing throughout the day. I was thinking of getting the single manual one for after feedings etc... Holding the bottle and then having to turn the thing on and all that gets too crazy sometimes.
I am curious if anyone uses manual and if it takes shorter/longer/same time to pump?
Re: Manual pumping vs electric
I used a manual one to EP for 3 weeks. Then I got an electric one. I get 2-3oz more in the same amount of time with the electric one. Another bumpy used a manual one too until i sent her an electric one and she said she got her regular amount in 1/2 the time with the electric one.
Are you tryin to build a big stash or an emergency one? I am now feeding some at breast but still pump every 4 hours. I have learned to feed on one side and pump on the other. I also preprep my pump. When i am done pumping I clean my flange, set it up with another bottle and leave it with pump until next session so all i have to do is turn it on. A manual requires more work.
A friend of mine just mentioned that she got the same amount in half the time today with a manual! So it might just depend on the pump. She has the Medela manual pump and the Medela Freestyle electric.
I am finding my Medela Freestyle is taking longer and longer, and am going to try the manual one later today.
I would be the other bumpie she would be speaking of... and she told you true... it takes half the time,.. .but I do still use my manual one if I need to pump after a feeding here and there, or I take it with me when I'm going to be out and about w/o LO. Plus, it can be easier to wash, etc... but I've been using the electric one more since she blessedly sent me since I got it earlier this week.
I have the Medela manual and I really like it.
Right now, though, I'm just pumping so MH can giver her a bottle every once in awhile and so we can eventually go on a date! I will be going back to work, but only part time (under 30 hours a week), so I think I'll be fine continuing with the manual. We'll see, though.
I haven't used an electric since once at the hospital, so I can't really compare, but I'm happy with my output and time spent pumping with the manual. You can only do one side at a time, though, of course. Well, unless you got 2 and had awesome hand/arm strength!
I tried my Medela manual pump last night and this morning, and agree with my friend - I get the same amount in half the time with my Medela hand pump, compared to my Medela Freestyle. And it hurts less!!
Really glad I got the Freestyle when Target was discontinuing it for $90-ish. If I'd paid the $400, I'd be really annoyed!
