Could I Be Pregnant After a Tubal Ligation??

Hello everyone!

I've been struggling with this for over a week now and I finally decided that I should get some opinions.

I am a mother of 3 - two boys, who are 5 & 7, and my daughter who is 18 months. I had my tubes tied on April 1, 2010. They told me that they snipped them & burned them shut. My period was a little wacky after having the surgery, and I experienced heavy bleeding & cramping for months. I went to my gyno, and he didn't really have any answers.

My last period was June 6, 2011. Like clockwork, for the last 9-10 months, my period has ALWAYS come on the 6th or 7th of each month. I always had PMS symptoms - crankiness, breakouts, mood swings, etc.

I am now two weeks late getting my period. I have taken 3 pregnancy tests and each have come back negative. Although, the first Equate (Walmart brand) test did have a faint HORIZONTAL line, not a vertical line.

I am experiencing an array of symptoms - feeling "bloated", always tired, nausea, headaches,
heartburn, constant itchiness on my legs & breasts, dizziness, and aversions to certain foods, and the two most recent - my boobs have started aching when I take my bra off (they're also not quite "fitting" in my bra anymore) & my urine and discharge have a strange sweet smell, though somewhat ammonia smell??

Any insight? Has anyone gotten pregnant after having a tubal ligation? Am I crazy, or are my symptoms that of pregnancy??

Oh, and my last pregnancy with our daughter....I took 7 pregnancy tests and was almost 8 weeks along before receiving a positive result.

Any insight is welcomed! I'm going crazy!!

  • It's not uncommon for a woman to occasionally have a cycle where she ovulates late or not at all. Even if you're "always" regular. It happens.

However, yes, it is possible to get pregnant after a tubal ligation. The chances are small (I believe it's 1-2%), but it can happen.

Keep testing once a week, and if you reach 60 days with no period, call your doctor.

  • Call your doctor. No reason to sit and worry for a month when they can do a quick blood draw or ultrasound to know for sure.

The problem that I'm having with this option is that I lost my health insurance last month. I was debating going to the hospital & applying for Charity Care to cover the cost.

Is there a free clinic in your area that does testing & ultrasounds? That is where I got my first one done at. They were a Christian place, but not preachy till I asked them about it & all the ladies were wonderful. I might look to see if something close to you might offer these services if insurance/money is an issue.

    Good luck! :-)

How did you lose it, through job loss?  If so and you have the option for COBRA, you can elect to get it retroactively.  If you have a gap in coverage then pregnancy can be considered a pre-existing condition so I'd want to find out ASAP if I was knocked up, so I could get insurance again ASAP.

  • I was on state insurance, through an extension from being on unemployment last year. When I went to my recent re-evaluation at Social Services, they told me that my DH makes $75 too much each month & that they will no longer cover the parents. State budgets cuts are the reason that they only cover children now, unless you make very little. (we live in NJ - I'm sure you've all heard about the debt problem we have here)

I'm going to look into a free clinic around here. I don't know of any around here, but maybe Social Services can point me in the right direction.
