Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Almost 10 month old not doing several things?

My LO will be 10 months on the 30th. He is not crawling on his hands and knees (only army crawling), won't pull himself up on furniture (he can if we hold our hands out) and won't feed himself because he can't do the pincer grasp. He had his 9 month check up on the 5th of this month and my pediatrician said that if he isn't crawling and pulling himself up by the middle of next month then he might have to do physical therapy. We work with him nightly on crawling and pulling himself up but he just won't do it. If we hold a toy in front of him and slowly draw it away from him he does crawl towards it but won't do it on his own. I don't want him to go to physical therapy and I have people telling me that he will do it when he's ready but I am just ready for him to be ready and do it!! Is he behind or probably just stubborn? When did your LO's do this? I don't know what else to do to help him :(

Re: Almost 10 month old not doing several things?

  • I think you need to relax.  Pushing him is not going to help, just play with him, have fun  and he will catch on when he is ready.  He is not going to go to physicaly therepy, and people you need to listen to the people telling you he will do it when he is ready.

Some babies never crawl on their hands and knees and that doesn't mean they are delayed.  He has found a way to be mobile and so that works for him.  As he gets stronger he will find other ways.

ps- as a mom who now as a walker, I would give anything to have day where my kid didn't move around so much.

    Once again, relax...it will come...

pps- my child was a late crawler, but an early walker and is now turning into a runner.

I have several friends who's kids are 8-9 months not doing these things.  I have a friend whos daughter when she was 1 wasn't doing thse and the docs weren't concerned.

  • My understanding is that crawling isn't even a milestone.  The army crawl, however, IS.  I think a decent amount of kids go straight from army crawl to walk, so I wouldn't worry too much about it at this point.  Although I know it is hard not to!

  • Thank you everyone. You are right I shouldn't worry - and all this 'practicing' we do at night doesn't seem to help, it just makes him grumpy and I don't want that. I guess we will just relax and let it be.

  • If you can coax him into it with toys, then he is just being stubborn, its not that he is not capable of it. I wouldn't worry, he probably will when he is ready.

I see babies all the time months older that aren't very much into crawling or pushing up on things to stand. I'm kind of shocked that your pediatrician said something about PT. Maybe have him be around some other babies crawling so he can be inspired. And I think maybe there is too much pressure? take a break. Maybe let him actually get the toy sometimes. Have you tried sitting further away from him and acting over exaggerated excited about any attempt to crawl? He might just be timid about it. I think one day he will just start crawling and you'll be like "PHEW!"

  • My friends son didnt start crawling until the day after his first birthday, now he is 15 months and wont walk, he just stands, but he is fine developmentally... once they get one thing then the other things come quick, dont worry girlie he will be just fine, but.... if your mommy senses are tingling and YOU think there is something wrong then look into it.

  • Does your LO spend any time around other babies or older kids? I noticed a huge jump in how much Aiden was crawling (although he still doesn't "crawl" he does forearms and knees in an army crawl, normal crawl combo), pulling up, etc when I started taking him to the daycare center at the gym for an hour a day 4-5 times a week. Being around the other kids really motivated him to be able to keep up with them.

  • Jake just started crawling 2 weeks ago, my pediatrician mentioned PT at our last appointment (before crawling).

If he hadn't started to crawl I would have sent him to PT, even though my husband thought I was crazy even to consider it. I don't see anything wrong with it. If my son needs help, we will get him help. What's the big deal with PT?

Dude, my baby won't practice crap at night. She's all tired from thinkin' big thoughts and what not.

I wouldn't worry, sounds like he's doing fine. He'll get there.

  • You can't teach a baby to walk, crawl or pull up - they will do it when their muscles and brain get to it, you know? Traditional crawling on hands and knees isn't even a real milestone - army crawling is fine! FWIW, my 9-mo-old is pulling up, but still army crawls everywhere, he still hasn't figured out crawling, and I'm sorta doubting he will anytime soon.

And you don't need a pincer grasp to eat - just start giving him bits of solid food, and I'm guessing he'll manage to get them in his mouth :). Try to relax!!

This!  Good luck and try to not stress out too much.

My DD is a week older than your DS and she doesn't crawl on all fours (just started army crawling about 2 weeks ago), doesn't pull herself up and barely wants to stand at all.  She doesn't get to sitting from laying down either (although very close)  I'm really not worried about it.  They are really only babies for a very short time and I am cherishing this time with her.

Also FWIW she is around other babies a little older and her age a few times a week.

  • DD did not crawl until 10.5 months, and she never army crawled. Now she is 14 months and she just started to walk within the past few weeks. They just do it when they are ready.

  • The problem with twins is that I expect them to do the same things at the same time.  Not happening.

One baby just started crawling last week.  He had been pulling up for a while, though.  Within the last week or so he's also started sitting up in the crib on his own.

The other one does not crawl at all.  He rolls around to get where he wants.   Yesterday, I noticed he leaned forward and put his hands down and tried to get in the crawl position, but gave up.  He hasn't pulled up yet, either, but he is trying.  I'm not worried and our pedi isn't worried either.

I wouldn't worry about him, just yet.  Your baby will get there in time.
