Food Allergy

Hazelnut allergy - very confused!

I went thru the allergen testing this morning, and according to the doc, I'm "very" allergic to hazelnuts.  Some trees, pollens, cats, grasses, mold, and more. But ragweed and these lil' nuts were by far the worst.

I don't seem to have ANY signs of allergies other than itching (mostly on my scalp, which gets red spots at best) and random spots on my body. And major issues with pregnancy loss, which no doc can seem to help with, or say if it's related to these allergies.

I'm just starting my "dr. google" research tonite, but evidently Hazelnuts are in a LOT of baked goods  & sweets, some cereals, breads, etc. I'm supposed to look for the word "nougat" and what else? Where's the most reliable place to see what foods this nut is hidden in?  We're transferring 3 beautiful embryos in less than two weeks (IVF) and I need to make SURE my body is as happy as possible.

And he said to just avoid all tree nuts, and carry an epi pen. REALLY?  For an itchy scalp?

Also, if anyone is familiar with this type of allergy, and can explain what the heck it has to do with BIRCH allergens, I'd appreciate it. I tuned him out after a while, as he was an odd duck, and made no sense. But I see there's something about birch, and some test I can pay a lot of money for OOP???....... huh????

THANKS!

Re: Hazelnut allergy - very confused!

  • Hazelnut allergy is a common allergy to have along with pollen.  I once went to the allergy doc because of bad seasonal allergies and like you left with an epi pen for my severe peanut allergy that I got diagnosed with despite 25 years of eating peanuts.  After my pregnancy and breastfeeding was done, I went to a new doctor, and he tested me and let me do the peanut challenge.  He explained that allergy doctors can be better with seasonal or environmental or food.  He understood a lot about food, and he knew the epi had never been necessary.  So, if you have time before the IVF, I would call around and ask if anyone specializes in food and see if you can get a second opinion.

  • The reason why he gave you an Epi is because all allergies, but especially food allergies, are unpredictable. While you may normally just get itchy, it could turn into full-blown ana at anytime.

  • I'm glad you got an answer.  I would ask every doctor involved in your care about the timeline for your ET... allergens can take up to 2 weeks to clear out of the body, and it can take a while for your antibodies to die down.  I'd hate for you to go into an ET if it's not been long enough for your body to heal, kwim?
