Wait, are you being serious? This isn't a joke poll or a names horror poll?
Is it a maiden name? Are you a Wolf Blitzer fan or something?
No go...

I know of only one man with this name and he was a former co-worker. People commented about his name all the time and not in a good way. I can't imagine being a child with this name. If a grown man named "Wolf" is ridiculed in a business setting I can hardly imagine being a child on the playground with this name.
Not so much. Besides, if it were short for Wolfgang, it would be pronounced "Vulf." I'm also led to believe from my German friends that Wolfgang (which I've always liked in the context of German people) is a bit of a lame grandpa name.
Clearly, I'm in the very tiny minority here. I actually like it (as a nn for Wolfgang). I come from a very German family, and am proud of my heritage. I'm also a musician, so I like the connection there. It's also a family name of mine. To be honest, I'm not sure I'm brave enough to use it a a FN, but I seriously considered it for a MN. I really don't think it's so horrible as the pp seem to think.
I just had to read Wolf Blitzer's wiki page to see if it is his real name (it is). I'm not a fan (I know a guy named Coyote and I think that is ridiculous), but perhaps one of the other names that means "wolf"? Apparently, Zev in Hebrew means "wolf."

Unacceptable unless you're this guy (and even he has the good sense to have it be his last name!)
My maiden name is Wolfe, and I still wouldn't use it as a child's name. MAYBE as a middle name...maybe, with high probability of "no". It's a minefield for cruel jokes...trust me, I heard every one of them, growing up with it as a last name.
I do, however, like PP's idea of coming up with a name whose meaning is "wolf".
If you really like the name, then you should use it! With all the different unique names people are giving their kids these days, he will fit in just fine. Again, if you like it, use it.
thanks everyone for your feedback... There is something I really like about the name but wasn't too sure if it should actually be added to the name list..

I love it! While I really like this board and enjoy it tremendously, people are really closed minded to names they haven't heard before, last names as fn, or think are "made-up". Wolf is a real name. It has been used since the 1800's (that I can find in the U.S.)... While uncommon, there are people named this. I don't see why it would be so terrible, when there are people named Rock, Stone, River, etc... But, I also love the name Fox, so I may be the odd one around here...

As a first name, no. As a middle name, yes. My son's middle name is Fox which is a family name. I would never use it as a first name. Much teasing potential there. Plus, I think it would be weird to have one child with a traditional name and the other with a bizarre name. I do like Wolf, but only as a middle name or short for Wolfgang.

I have a friend who has a brother named Wolfgang. They call him Wolfie. The first time I heard it I thought it was the dog they were talking to. Her other siblings have "normal" names David, Justin, Katelyn.
Personally, I dont like it but I have seen it done.

I am being serious. I sort of like the name (short for Wolfgang or Wolfric)... obviously I am not sure about the name though...
but I will take it that you don't like the name. thanks for responding!
Wolf is awful. Please go with Faolan (FWAY-lan) which means little wolf. It is on my long list.
Edit : There are also several other names that mean Wolf too instead of actually naming a baby Wolf.
love is for every her, love is for every him, love is for everyone
You are welcome ! I will add more suggestions:::
Conall means "strong wolf"
Conan means "little wolf"
Conri means "wolf king"
Lyall means "wolf"
Danica 10.22.10 | Milo 12.23.12
Please do not name your child Wolf.
