Cloth Diapering

About to place a GMD newborn order...need advice please!

Ladies, I need your advice! I'm placing an order on GMD for my newborn diapers. For the first 6 months or so, I'd like to use prefolds and covers.

Will the following work for about 6 months? (I'm estimating a 7.5-8 lb newborn)

6 Thirsties Duo size 1 covers (already got these from my showers)

In my GMD cart I've got:

2 doz. orange edge prefolds

2 doz. yellow edge prefolds

3 snappi

2 Bummis super lite newborn covers

Do I really need that many prefolds, or could I do 18 of each size?

Do I need the Bummis newborn covers if Thirsties size 1 are supposed to fit from newborn?

Thanks for your help!

  • I've only used my Thirsties cover a few times, but I think it seems pretty big.  It's also a size one, and DS is 13lbs.  I used a Thirties Fab Fitted under the cover and there was still room, and seemed bulky.  I'd get a few more newborn sized covers for the beginning if I were you.

Someone else may be more helpful though, since I don't use covers that often. :)

  • Do you have any other diapers?  If not, definitely go for the 24 prefolds.  18 prefolds won't last very long with a nb!

  • I think it looks good, but I would get the newborn Bummis Super Brite covers instead.  I've heard of some issues with the Super Lite covers and I'm not sure if they are as small.

I don't know if it will last you 6 months because some babies can be pretty chunky by then and using the red edge from 3 months old.  You can always order more later though.  It should definitely get you through the first 3 months though!

  • I think the 2 dozen of each color is good, that's what I have and it's worked great for both my boys, and they were both chunky babies.  I have never used the Thirsties duo before, but I highly recommend the Thirsties size XS to go with the orange prefolds.  They fit both my newborns so well and seriously never leak!  I had a couple Bummis superbrite, but I liked the Thirsties a lot more, but that's just been my experience :)

  • Thanks for your help. I'll go with 2 dozen of each and 4 newborn covers.

  • With my DD I had 3 NB covers and 5 size 1 duos. Honestly, the duos lasted me like 7 months. DD was 8 lbs even at birth. She used the NB covers up until she was about 2 months old. We then got into the size 1 duos. I gave my SIL all my size 1 duos for her DD. She has used them since pretty much day 1 of CDing. If you get applix then you could totally get away with using just the duos. Her DD was 7.4 lbs at birth and if you overlap the tabs then they work great.

Also, you do honestly need 2 doz prefolds. I still can go through 2 doz in 2-3 days. My DD doesn't really even pee or poop anymore O_O

  • 2 dozen of each size prefold is good.  That's what I have.  I agree with one of the PPs that I'd get Bummis Super Brite newborn covers instead of the Bummis Super Lites.  I have one super lite and I'm not a huge fan.  It doesn't have the double gussets in the legs like the super brites do so they don't hold in the runny poo as well, unless you use a fitted or something with elastic in the legs underneath it.  Also, DS is kind of a heavy wetter and the wetness started to wick through the cover after being on him for 1.5 hours while he was asleep.  The Thirsties Duos are really good, but they may not be low enough for the cord in the beginning.  Once the cord falls off, you'll be good to go with them though.  And kind of a side note, the workhorse fitted diapers that they make are awesome.  I have 6 newborn sized ones and I love them.  They are super trim and contain really well.  I got the ones without the snaps and just use a snappi to close them.  They are worth the money.

Sorry, that got kinda long!  Hopefully it's helpful!

  • I think you have a great start! I used the Duo Wraps with my newborn when she was about 2 weeks old and after her chord stump had fallen off. She was 7.10 at birth and they were fine. Definitely stick with 2 dozen of each size. My DD could go through 3-5 diapers in one change because she would constantly poo on it before I could even get it on lol! The yellow edge may not last you until 6 months though. If your LO starts to really chunk up like mine you may have to order some red edge sooner than you think. My baby has been in red for a little over a month already and we've moved up to the size 2 Duos. I think it just depends on the size of your baby and how fast he/she grows. Keep in mind that you can always sell whatever LO outgrows to fund the next size. That's what I did.  GL!

  • Thanks again ladies for all the helpful information.

I just placed an order for 2 dozen each of orange and yellow prefolds, along with a 3 pack of snappis.

I skipped the Bummis super lites as some of you suggested, and I'm going to look for a few used Bummis super brites instead.
