B.R.A.T. Diet. Has anyone seen this?

https://www.bratdiet.org/

I bought it at the store and wonder if it works.  My son just got a bit sick with diarrhea today and threw up a bit earlier.  I'm wondering if I should give this a shot.  My doc never heard of it.

  • Looks gimmicky.  You could just do regular BRAT, but it seems to be a little outdated.

When my kids are sick I let them eat whatever they want while trying to steer them toward blander foods.

  • I've heard of it, and know of a few people who had good luck with it after their lo's had bad stomach viruses. GL!

  • I saw it but nothing on the ingredient list stuck out to me as something he really needed. I just did the regular B.R.A.T diet for a few days.
  • I did this a few months ago for not holding anything down.  Honestly, I forgot all about it, otherwise I would have mentioned it!  Angel   We didn't buy a product, I just fed her bananas, rice, applesauce and toast for a few days.  Worked perfectly.  If you google it you can find the non-commericialized don't wanna make money off mommies version, lol.

  • The BRAT diet is the classic diet used for GI upset (primarily diarrhea).  It consists of bananas, rice, apples (or applesauce--no sugar added!), and toast.  We use this often in the hospital.  No need to buy anything special!

Try Gatorade, and don't waste your money - you can do BRAT simply at home.

  • You shouldn't start BRAT until the vomiting goes away. Clear liquids, and just sips, until vomiting has stopped for something like 4 hrs, then BRAT.

This. Anything that DS will eat/drink is good with me. When I'm sick I go with the regular BRAT diet of bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast.

  • No, I just follow good old-fashioned BRAT when DD has an upset stomach- bananas, rice, apple sauce, and toast.

To pp who says it's outdated- why? I've been dealing with colitis for 15 + years and swear by this myself when I have a flare-up.

  • I agree with all the pp's that say to just stick to the BRAT diet. Also they make pedialyte popsicles ( like otter pops) so if you really want him to have some try a popsicle. GL!

I don't have any sources, but I have heard that it is outdated to use BRAT as a general rule for stomach upsets/diarrhea. . . HOWEVER if it works for you, then use it!!

  • I use the BRAT diet for LO when he is sick whether it is diarreha or vomiting.  It works great so there is no reason I would waste my money on that stuff.

    Agreed.

Pedialyte is good for hydration. Gatorade is too except it's bad for the runs. The sugar makes things loosen up more.

  • Well the only place I've ever heard of the BRAT diet is here... so I have no idea whether it works or not.  I personally hate banana's so it wouldn't work for me, and when I'm sick it's crackers or plain buns until I'm feeling better.  And gingerale!

  • Umm, you might want to nix the yogurt. Any dairy is really hard for the gut to process and usually makes diarrhea worse, sugar too. And remember ginger ale won't help unless it has real ginger in it.
