Re: baby hates cd :(

  • How old is your little boy? My 9-month old would prefer not to have his dipe changed, EVER, because he just doesn't like the process of being pinned down for 2 minutes while he gets changed. He hates it regardless of what kind of diaper we're putting on his bum :-)

  • at what point does he start screaming?  When you take the old diaper off? After you close the diaper up?  Once he has peed and feels the wet cloth against him?

What kind of diapers are you using?

  • It looks like your LO is only a couple of weeks old, right?  At that age, my DS screamed at diaper changes regardless of what we were putting on him.  Bulk shouldn't matter to a baby that young; it's not like they're going anywhere.

  • DD1 was almost 1yo when I started cd'ing and at first she didn't care for the cd's either. She would cry as soon as I put them on, so I think she wasn't used to the feeling of them. After a while of using the cd's exclusively, maybe 2 weeks or so, she was fine with it.

I haven't noticed any issues with my nb wearing the cd's, but I've had to use a mix of disposables and cd's. I've been using both intermittently since birth, so I think she's been used to both. Maybe you might want to try using cd's a couple times a day just to get lo used to the feeling of it.

  • Yeah, if you're dealing with a tiny nb, it's not the type of diaper that's pissing him off. DD screamed bloody murder when we changed her at that age. I think she hated having a cold butt.

My son SCREAMED at every. single. diaper change for at least the first month, maybe two.  As a first time mom I did not know that was common and was freaking out at first, thinking I was doing something wrong!  Alas, it is "normal".

ETA--> We used sposies for the first 6 weeks.

  • Ditto the pp.  Babies hate getting undressed since they're cold and being stretched out.  Cloth diapers really has nothing to do with that.  They get over it by a month old or so.

  • he starts screaming once i close the cloth diaper. then he'll stop for a bit and be just more fussy until he pees then he screams again. i am using fuzzibuns (he does best with these, they are size small), happy heiny, and bumgenius. it just seems like he doesn't like the feeling of so much against him. it's worse when we put him in the car seat. that's what made me think that it was the bulk that bothered him. i guess i'll just keep using them to get him used to it....

Have you actually tried putting him in a sposie to see if he reacts the same way?

You can try using some fleece liners, in case the wet feeling is bothering him.  DS doesn't like being wet either.  Usually, though, I just save the fleece liners for nighttime and naptime (if I manage to time his diaper change right for naptime), and change him when he starts fussing.  Some times it's every 20 minutes.  It does take a little getting used to, but this way he doesn't have pee against his skin for very long, and it makes me very happy we CD!

  • It took DS 4 months to not scream every time he's in the car seat. Sounds to me like your DS is like my DS and hates being fiddled with, which would explain why he is upset in the car sear and when you put the diapers on.

Just in case, be sure to change right before putting him inthe car seat - microfiber inserts are bad about compression leaks and he could be feeling wet.

I agree about seeing if it's the same with sposies, but I'm willing to bet it's normal (even though i remember how bad it sucked).

This.  We didn't start CDing until just last week, DS is now 4 months old.  He HATED being in his car seat until he was about 12 weeks old or so.  He also cried during diaper changes.  But now that he's more aware of what's going on around him, he's more distracted and as long as I don't take too long changing him, he's happy!

I do think the cloth takes some getting used to on older babies, or ones that have previously used sposies.  Keep with it! He may just be in that fussy newborn stage.  :)

I bet it's the microfiber. I'd suggest buying some flats and stuffing the diapers with those. Natural fibers don't squish pee out like microfiber. You can buy a dozen new flats for $25 or find them used on a site like diaperswappers.com.

  • update: I have been keeping with the cloth and he is doing much much better. It seems like the pocket diapers and AIOs are working best because they are trimmer. When I use the flats he does ok but not for as long. Anyway, just thought I'd let you all know it's better now. I guess I get to buy more cute dipes Wink
