Baby Names

Classic, Strong Boy Names. WDYT?

DH and I cannot decide on a name for our litte boy!  We thought we had decided on both a girl and a boy name before we knew what we were having, but now we just feel like we aren't sure anymore.  We have a list of 6, but none of them really feel like the one to both of us yet...what do you think of them?  Most of the names we gravitate to are classic and masculine (IMO of course, you may not agree).

  • Samuel (Sam)
  • Benjamin (Ben)
  • Henry
  • Vincent (Vin or Vinny)
  • Wade
  • Dean

My thoughts (if you're interested, it's a little long):  I LOVE Sam for a boy, but DH is nervous because he feels like girls have "taken it over" with the name Samantha nn Sam.  I like Ben a lot too, but a lot of family members have insisted they'll call him 'Benny', which I hate.  I know I can just say "No, his name is Ben" but I just feel like if it comes naturally to SOOO many of our family members, it'll be a long hard battle that I'm not sure I want to fight.  I like Henry, and don't really see a downside to the name.  Just not sure it's the one.  Vin or Vinny I like, Vincent not so much.  But I want LO to have a more formal name he can use when he's older should he choose to.  Also, I feel like Vin or Vinny needs an Italian last name, which I no longer have since marriage.  So it just sounds kind of off to me.  DH doesn't agree though so maybe I'm crazy.  Wade I like because it's unique (IMO) but I'm nervous it's a little too "country" sounding.  Dean I don't think I really care for, but DH is a big fan.

Re: Classic, Strong Boy Names. WDYT?

  • Benjamin and Samuel are my favorite of your choices, followed closely by Henry. The rest are NMS.

Benjamin was one of my top choices for a boy, but it was just so popular - and it turns out that 2 of the 3 people who were pregnant the same time as me ended up using it (we didn't know it at the time we were choosing, kind of funny).

I would not worry about Sam being taken over at all. I don't think Samantha is very popular these days (at least, I don't know any) and Samuel is a good, classic boy name. I really like it.

  • I like the name Vincent out of your list the best. Not a fan of the name Dean.. i worked with a Dean and he was lazy.. and kinda femanine.. (he was always eating those lean cusine meals.. which seems really girly to me)

  • I really love the list you have here. I gravitate toward the same type of name. Our little guy is going to be Charles (Charlie). I also really love Victor, but couldn't convince DH of it. :)

Of the names on your list, my favorite is Vincent. Like your hubby, I don't think that it needs an Italian surname to pull off Vin or Vinny.

I'm a little worried about that with Ben too..we don't know any right now, or anyone pregnant with a boy who could potentially use the name right now, but it's pretty popular and names at the top of the SS list usually hang around the top 10 or so for a few years.

Samuel or Sam are both very masculine.

    I love all your choices.

Thanks :)  I LOVE Charlie but I couldn't get DH on board with Charles.

  • I definitley like Sam and Ben, and I will throw in Jack as a strong name.  As for nicknames...people are going to come up with a nickname no matter what you choose. Go with the name you love ;-)

  • I love Henry but I am extremely biased as that is what we named DS. Honestly, I really like almost all of your names - not crazy about Wade - but still a fine name.

I would go with any of the first four as they all have good nicknames but are also more formal sounding when using the full name. I do agree though that I don't like "Benny" as a nickname for Benjamin. Ben is definitely much better.

I don't think Vincent is going to be a problem with a non-Italian last name. The family next door gave both of their kids Italian names, Vincent and Cira (pronounced see-rah) and their last name does not sound Italian. I had not even noticed this before you mention it.

Thanks!  Everybody tells me I'm crazy about the whole non-Italian last name thing...Maybe I'm just a little bitter that I now have a last name that sounds like I joined the Witness Protection Program haha

  • In order of how I like them:

    Wade
    Henry
    Samuel
    Benjamin
    Vincent
    Dean

I also happen to love Theodore, not sure if you considered that one or not. I don't think it's as popular as Henry, Sam and Ben are becoming.

Also, if Wade is too country (I love it) have you thought about Wayne?

I really like the names you've picked so far! Good luck in choosing one! DH and I have yet to settle on or names. Its so hard!

  • I LOVE Sam and Ben. Henry's nice. I'm not a fan of the other names though, especially Vincent (and any nn for it) or Wade.
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
    • Samuel (Sam) I like this the best of all your choices, and I don't think it's feminine at all. We have a 6-month-old at church names Sam and he is adorable!
    • Benjamin (Ben) I like this, too, but as PP mentioned, I'd be worried about popularity.
    • Henry This is my nephew's name (my maiden name), and there's one other boy at church with the same name. I like it, but it's prob. too popular for my taste.
    • Vincent (Vin or Vinny) I actually like the full name better than Vin or Vinny. Don't think you need an Italian last name.
    • Wade NMS
    • Dean NMS

Thanks for your help!  I'm not crazy about Theodore right off the bat, but I feel like it could grow on me.  O god I hope you didn't just make my list longer!!  A friend of ours just had a baby las month and named him Wayne, so we can't use that one.

  • Sorry your post seems too long to read.

I'm guessing you want to know if we like your baby names and that you are going for a strong classic boy name...

Don't like Wade or Dean. LOVE the rest.

  • Excellent choices! Benjamin, Samuel, and Henry were our top three. We've since vetoed Henry (because with William, it was just too "royal"), and are still stuck between Benjamin and Samuel. We canNOT decide. They're both winners, in my book.

Vincent, Wade, and Dean, while nice names, just aren't in the same league as classics like Benjamin, Samuel, & Henry. IMHO, of course.

I agree with this--I just don't care for either of these.  I like all of the others though.  I think Vincent is fine without an Italian last name--Vincenzo or something would seem odd without an Italian last name, but not if I knew the mother was Italian.

What about John?  It is a classic that isn't in the top 20 anymore.

  • Love all of them except Wade, it's just nms.

I wanted to use Dean, but it has the same beginning sound as our last name, so it'd sound too rhymey.  Vincent is another one I love but I had to give up because our son's initials would be VD.

Good luck to you!  You really can't go wrong with any of these!

I don't like Vincent or Wade but I do like Dean.

  • i like themm all except wade and dean...they dont really fit the rest of your listimo.

I love vincent and ben the best

  • I like them all except Samuel and Vincent.  I really like Wade and Dean!

  • Wade and Dean are just terrible.  Sorry.

Henry is DS1's name so obviously I love it.

Sam(uel) is actually in our top 2 for this DS2, but I think it's going to lose to Jack.

I like Ben(jamin) a lot as a name, but I've had so many as students that its lost its luster to me.

Vincent isn't good or bad... just NMS.

(btw, I know what you mean about not being "drawn" to a particular name... we've all but settled on Jack but I still don't LOVE it as much as I love Henry's name)

  • I love strong, classic boy names too!  Really love Henry and Benjamin.  I agree with PP and love John, Andrew and Thomas too.  Good luck choosing!
  • I like Benjamin, Samuel and Henry the best...
