RAST test results not adding up

Hi Ladies,

I posted on here yesterday about my 9month old daughter's possible food allergies.  We got her RAST test results back today, and they don't seem to add up. I know this test isn't always accurate, so I'm taking it with a grain of salt. I'm just curious if this has happened to anyone? If so what was the outcome?

So my baby girl has been covered in eczema from when she was 4 months until now.  We switched her formula to Alimentum at 6 months and saw no improvement.  About a month ago, we switched her to neocate, and the difference is amazing. You would never know she had any eczema...her skin is that clear!  The RAST test was for milk, soy, nut, wheat, and egg.  These are her results...

Walnut-Class #3

Egg-- Class # 4

Wheat--Class #4

Peanut- Class #5

Soy--Class #2

Milk was negative.

All the things she is positive for, she hasn't had yet...except for the fact there is soy in her formula.  We thought for sure she had a milk allergy. I'm at a loss, and confused.  I can't help but think the results for milk were a false negative.

We see an allergist in a couple weeks, so I'm hoping to get more answers then. Has this happened to anyone out there?

Thanks!

  • DS milk allergy test was also negative too.  However, he did have the internal GI bleed when he was 3 months.  Switched him to nutramagen and hadn't had a problem.  We did a weekend test to see if dairy was still a problem just before his first birthday.  He was miserable all weekend.  Cranky and gassy.  I did read somewhere that it can be "T" cells instead of IgE cells for internal reactions, and they don't come up on an allergy test.  If you can, let us know what the allergest says.  Thanks.

  • You could also ask the allergist about doing blood testing (RAST is the skin scratch one- right?  I still get my tests mixed up).  We did both forms of allergy testing and compared the results- positives on both = much more likely that the test is accurate.  I would guess since you saw the problem go away with the removal of milk- it's either some other GI milk issue or the test was a false negative.

  • The RAST tests are not always accurate.  My son's said negative for dairy even though we know he has a dairy allergy through food trial.  For the food trial we did both regular dairy products and lactose free, he reacted with both so that told us it's an allergy.  Very confusing and it was done with his GI Dr.

We just got his RAST test results back and were surprised to find wheat and egg as allergens now.  But that would explain the chronic sinus issues and eczema all over his face that recently started cropping up.  So now I have to eliminate those items from his diet.  We will do a food challenge at the Dr's office in about 6 months.
