Would you buy this doll for your DD?

https://www.nj.com/hobokennow/index.ssf/2011/07/hoboken_moms_sound_off_on_cont.html

Really? Does there really need to be a doll to teach little girls to breastfeed?

  • I think it is silly to have a special doll for it.  Kids with infant siblings who are breastfed often copy mommy and pretend breastfeed their dolls & stuffed animals and I see nothing wrong with that. It's natural to be curious and want to copy mom  dad but you sure don't need a special doll that comes with a halter top that it can latch onto.

  • I have to disagree. I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

There are baby dolls with bottles so it makes sense there are baby dolls who breastfeed. The whole point of dolls is to emulate what moms do with their babies, right?

I agree. I don't think the halter top is necessary.

I think open discussion about breastfeeding is fine and it's something totally natural and nothing to be ashamed about. I don't have a daughter but I guess if I was getting ready to have a baby and I had a child who was old enough to be inquisitive  and understand I might buy them the breastfeeding doll to help them understand when Mommy feeds the baby and what's going on??? That being said I don't quite get the purpose of it. Breastfeeding is something normal and natural that adult women do. So is masturbation but I don't see the masturbation doll making it's way to the market. I guess I just don't see the NEED for the doll when you can just explain breastfeeding to a child but I know little girls also want to be like Mommy and if they see Mommy feeding the baby they might start questioning? Blah I don't know. Blah blah blah.
Really? You're comparing breastfeeding to masturbation? Feeding your child is not a sexual act.

I think this doll does a good thing by trying to show that BFing is just as normal as bottle feeding. If there's dolls sold specifically to bottle feed then there should be dolls sold specifically to nurse. Yes, I can see how it's silly to have a special doll for it, a child can pretend to nurse any doll. But also, I think that a doll like this is useful in the movement to make nursing less taboo and more an accepted part of our society. If I had a DD I would consider it for her.

  • Cassie, BF =/= masturbation.

You cannot even compare the two and I am giving you a serious Hmm for even bringing it up.

This. DD#1 "BF's" her dolls all the time, I have friends who have sons that do the same thing. Its not a big deal. Its something they do naturally, nothing they need special gear for.

  • I don't have a problem with it, but I dont really see the need for a specific breastfeeding doll.  I'm sure when we have another baby B will see me breastfeeding and be curious about it and maybe copy what I'm doing with her dolls.  Which is fine.  I doubt I would get her a doll that came with special equipment to "latch on" though.

  • I don't think we want to teach them to be "mommies" at such an early age.  It's natural to be curious but I won't buy that doll and might give you the side eye if I see you in the mall with your daughter breastfeeding a doll.  I'm just sayin'

  • imageheckysue:
You don't have to teach them.  Kids will mimic what they see.  You don't "teach" a kid to be a mommy by buying a doll with a bottle.  The kid WANTS a doll with a bottle.  Or will probably start pretending to feed any old baby doll or stuffed animal a pretend bottle.  This isn't that much different.

OK, not going to lie, I wouldn't go out of my way to buy this toy and I think it's overkill.  But responses like "it's totally inappropriate" or comparing BFing to masturbation annoy the crap out of me.

    I completely agree.

  • It's no more "inappropriate" than a doll that comes with a bottle.  What's the big deal?

I side eyed myself for bringing it up. And no shiiit sherlock to the PP who says BFing is not a sexual act...I BF DS and I do realize that so thanks. It was the only example I could think of about something that is also natural but just isn't necessary.

LOL. You do realize YOU were the one comparing BFing to a sex act, right?
  • If you get that doll with this doll (NSFW), you would have two wicked awesome period party gifts.

Whatthefuck is inappropriate about a doll specially designed for kids to pretend breastfeed?  So are dolls that come with bottles inappropriate as well or do you just like double standards?

I have to agree. North American women have such issues surrounding breast feeding (I don't mean issues with it, I mean issues with the whole process - myself included), and in a lot of cases, its the lack of normalcy and education that must women our age grew up with. While I do think a bf'ing doll is overboard, I certainly don't see anything wrong with it. The halter top is a little much though.

Also, it mentioned in the article that bf'ing is an adult topic, and I couldn't disagree more with that! It needs to be an open, age appropriate all included discussion. If a 2 year old was to ask me what it's about I would say thats how the baby eats, like puppies and kitties, mama makes the milk for the baby. If it was 9 year old asking, I'd be more likely to explain the mechanics.  Just sayin!

Ha ha. You will only teach a girl via the dolly that breastfeeding is normal, not a boy? And you will teach him the gendered idea that boys don't play with baby dolls instead?

When I was little I breastfed all my dolls mimicking my mother feeding my younger siblings.  I don't think there needs to be a special doll for it, but I'll tell you what, if I knew that doll existed when I was 6 I would have asked for it.  I don't think there's really a market for it but I don't see the harm in it.
  • No. thats something she can learn about when she has her own baby.
