Food Allergy

Hygiene hypothesis

So... What are your thoughts on it?

I am conflicted. It leads me in the direction of "something I did wrong has led DS to his allergies" but I suppose I keep coming back to that school of thought regardless.

In case you aren't familiar with it, HERE is the wikipedia.

And in a nutshell, it's basically that we're too clean and sanitize too much. Our lack of exposure to germs is leading to underdeveloped (or incorrectly developed) immune systems, which has caused the rise in allergies.

Re: Hygiene hypothesis

  • I didn't read the link, but I find it interesting.  One study I saw on CNN (I believe) a few weeks ago, said the class most likely to have food allergies is middle-class whites and the class least likely is low-class whites.  I wondered if it had to do with cleanliness?  Maybe lower-class whites live in dirtier environments?  NOT trying to stereotype or offend anyone!!!  I just wonder if that was the reasoning for those results.

  • I don't believe that.

They also say that c-sections may cause FA b/c your not exposed to the same bacteria when going through natural birth.

I use to blame my diet all the time! there are three moms on here with twins and all three have 1 twin with food allergies and 1 without.  And you know they ate the same diet and were just as clean (or dirty) with both.

There really is no solid proof and i'm going with our food supply is corrupt. some kids react to it one way and others another way.

  • I think a variety of things cause food allergies.  And its different for everyone.  For most kiddos its being predisposed to being allergic by having allergic parents of family members.  Over exposure during pregnancy can up the risk if a child is already predisposed to being allergic.  But I honestly don't think they even know.  Even allergy conditions like EOE PID and others....there are no clear answers, but I don't think I washed my hands too much or cleaned my house too much.  I grew up in the projects before moving to farmland.  And then I went to college in a dirty city.  I work with children....filled with germs.  So yeah no.
