Breastfeeding

2 different sizes

Is it posible that I could  need a diff. sized shield for each breast? I ask this bc I am only getting milk on one side and am wondering if my fit is not right on the other side.

Re: 2 different sizes

  • Of course it's possible. All women are naturally a little larger on their dominant side, whether it be their hand, foot or breast. Go ahead and compare your fingers (pinkies might be a little obvious), or if you've ever worn a new pair of shoes all day, your dominant side gets tight and uncomfortable first. Same for breasts and nipples. It becomes less obvious (the difference in size of breasts) once you wean - but to be clear, it is only "obvious" to us! The differences in size of breasts are so slight, that we tend to be the only ones who ever fuss about it. :)

  • It's possible, but if your nipples are centered in the shield, not rubbing on the sides, and relatively comfortable, I don't think that's the problem. It's normal for one side to produce more. I responded to your other post but - Your milk is just coming in. Your body is busy trying to just make enough to feed your LO. You are pumping after feeding him, so it's possible he emptied you. Give yourself a break. I would also advise pumping after nursing once per day, in the early morning, to avoid an oversupply issue.

  • crysmike, I wish I only had to pump once a day but the LC told me to do it after every feeding right now to make sure LO has enough supply and I am guessing to also keep stimulating my supply. I will have to check into this more. Thanks
