soy makes boys gay?

or feminine?

I was talking to my sister in law and she mentioned this to me.she said she heard and it and they have done research on it. she heard it on some podcast.

My son cant have dairy since he was a month old. I have been on soy milk, butter and yogurt since i am breastfeeding. So now we are introducing it to him. he loves yogurt!

But from what I read you have to have 12 servings of this a day for this to happen.

  • Really?

I suppose it depends on whether your beliefs lean toward the fact that sexual orientation is based on nature v. nurture.

I have never heard this (nor do I believe it).

  • I didn't click on the link- but soy does have estrogen in it.  I highly doubt there is a causal relationship between soy and a man's sexuality (for example: my DH was on soy milk when he was a toddler due to milk issues.  he's not gay.  promise). But I'm assuming that's where your SIL/the author made that jump.

The research on the effects of the estrogen in soy is mixed and just really being examined by the medical community.  I did read an article about soy in prepared foods leading to the earlier onset of puberty in girls.  Soy is in pretty much everything now and it's probably not as healthy as everyone once thought when it's eaten in such huge quantities.  Our son doesn't get soy milk due to the estrogen.  However- most of his other safe foods have soy in them.  So we limit what we can.  With a milk allergy- we use other subs when possible but soy is going to be part of his diet.

  • I read the Dr. Oz book "You, Having a Baby" when I was pregnant and he does say in there that pregnant women shouldn't eat too much soy because it can "femanize male genitalia." Not sure what the quantity would have to be, but Dr. Oz made it sound like it would be an outer anatomy issue, not an inner sexuality one.

  • I'm not going to touch the gay thing with a ten foot pole but I thought the estrogen/soy/men thing had been around quite a while and they even suggest grown men limiting their soy intake due to detrimental health effects. I don't remember specially what they are but DH has brought this up more than once while we are gorging ourselves on Edamame.

  • My 3 yr old cousin is allergic to all dairy products, so he can only drink soy milk. He is only 3 and all about the ladies. Nor do I believe that a certain brand of milk is gonna make a boy gay/feminine... That's just my opinion. If he is going to be that way, it's because of his preferences, not his milk!

  • I do not believe that soy "makes boys gay".

I do believe that it is bad for us for the most part.  This is a really good article that outlines exactly what is so bad, and what is actually good, about soy.  It addresses the estrogen issue as well.

Our entire family avoids soy like the plague.  Our endocrine systems are pretty important to us ;)

  • Not exactly.  Soy does have a fair amount of estrogen in it so that's why some don't recommend it for boys. But you would have to have a LOT of soy to do any harm (in the estrogen dept) and i don't think you would have ever enough soy to change the boys sex.. if he's gay -he would have been gay with our with out the soy (IMO).

But.. i personally (IMO!) do not like soy b/c it is regenerated and it's not as healthy as it use to be.  They have too much GMO in it.  My son was allergic to milk and soy so we avoided it and now that he might be able to have soy, i'm limiting it.

They say soy sauce, temph and some other forms of soy are pure and safe.. tofu and soy milk is not so much. - i think i read that in the book called "China study"

Great article.. i went straight to the "Dark side of soy" and i think i'm done w/ soy. I've been avoiding a ton of it but still eat some soy patties here and there or good dogs.  They are so right, we totally westernized our soy.

I try to avoid GM foods as much as possible, but i was shocked that 91% fo soy grown in the US is GM!

And here is # 8 regarding the main topic..

Soy infant formula puts your baby's health at risk..
Nearly 20 percent of U.S. infants are now fed soy formula, but the estrogens in soy can irreversibly harm your baby's sexual development and reproductive health. Infants fed soy formula take in an estimated five birth control pill' worth of estrogen every day

Infants fed soy formula have up to 20,000 times the amount of estrogen in circulation as those fed other formulas!

I have read some of this elsewhere (i think "the china study.) but this article really gets right to it. it talks about the safe soy.. which is Tempeh, miso, natto, soy sauce..  I personally never heard of natto so i have to look into that (perhaps for a new soy option for me).. But i have been avoiding tofu since it's regenerated (and it confirms b/c it's not on the safe side on this article either)

I am shocked that it says to avoid Edamame.  I thought that is the safest soy -bummer - i loooove edamames.

    ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Dairy intolerance runs in our family and several of my cousins, uncles, and nephews drank soy formula and soy milk to this day, and none are gay or feminine in any way. I know that soy can sometimes emit estrogen, but I don't believe that has anything to do with being gay or feminine.

  • And I just have to go there...

You can not *do* anything that will make your child gay.

Everything that has been linked in this thread says that it can potentially cause feminizing physical characteristics. Being a feminine man does not mean he is a gay man.

It is just sad to me that you consider sexual orientation an adverse side effect of a food product. And that it obviously carries a negative weight with you.

  • Ugh.  I love how people hear a statement and run with it.  If boys have the xxy factor then soy can harm them by putting too much estrogen into their system.  It doesn't cause them to be Gay...  it can cause other health problems for them though.  But I might add that the XXY factor is pretty rare as is any genetic chromosonal defect resulting in an extra chromosone.

  • I sure hope not because my guy is on soy milk and loves it!

No offense to anyone and I wouldnt care what he chooses to be, but i doubt that food/drink would cause it to happen.

Sometimes people read something and believe it to be true instead of going the extra few steps and investigating it.

I have gay men and women on both sides of my family and friends who are gay.  They all could tell you they were born this way.  No one or thing made them gay.

just wanted people thoughts on this. I just heard it and wanted to see if you ladies have heard it at all since I am sure like my son, he can only have soy.

I am not even going to go there with you. and yes I know I cant make him gay that is what the article said...
