HSG? What to expect?

We just finished cycle 10 with a BFN.  I met with my OB/GYN today and she is running a bunch of blood work, a SA on DH and is also requesting I get an HSG next week.  Basically covering all the basics and then sending me on to an RE.

Is there anything I should know/expect with the HSG?

TIA.

Re: HSG? What to expect?

  • I took some motrin (I think...it may have been a leftover vicodin from the D&C) about 30 minutes before.

The procedure itself wasn't too bad.  To me, it felt like strong period cramps.

Something I didn't expect was to have period like bleeding for about a week following the procedure.

The place I went let me watch on the monitor and I could see the dye go in.  I also saw it shoot through my tubes, so I was 99% sure the doc would call me and say I was all clear.

  • It was no biggie for me, I know a lot of people said it hurt and they had cramping that lasted awhile afterwards, but mine really wasn't that bad.  I think I took two advil before hand just in case though.  I had about 10-15 seconds of OMG! WTF? cramping and that was it.  It was over very quickly, I think I spent 20x longer waiting and worrying about it.  The room/table/equipment is kind of scary looking in an "abducted by aliens" sort of way.

I did think it was really cool to watch the screen and see the fluid outline my uterus and tubes and all, I'm a dork.

Good luck, I hope everything looks normal.  Sorry you have to go through this.  :)

  • no help here, but just to say crap chelsea, sorry you guys are going through this
  • My fist one hurt really, really bad.  But that was because I had a septum that divided my uterus in half and the dye caused major pressure.  The second wasn't as bad (septum was removed) ...but I also took Vicodin and Valium Embarrassed

Make sure you bring a good pad with you.  The first time I didn't bring anything and they gave me a nasty hospital diaper style pad.  I bled for a couple of days.  The pain and cramping wasn't bad once it was over.

I would say this was my experience too.  Slight discomfort during it but it was over quickly.

  • Thank you ladies.  I was a bit freaked out, but I feel more at ease now.  I'm scheduled to get it done next Tuesday.

  • I had the HSG done today.  Looks like there are no blockages.  As far as the test was concerned, it was not pleasant but far from unbearable.  The Dr. said it took twice as long as it should have though.  It seems my uterus has an extreme tilt, so feeding the catheter was not easy and he was worried it would not take.  Luckily he was able to get just enough in to get good flow with the dye.  Hopefully I won't have to have that done again.

I had the same issue, my uterus was very tilted (I don't know if it still is or if it straightened out after having a baby) and apparently the angle of my cervix was "odd."  My Dr. knew this before the HSG though and changed his schedule that day so he could do it himself as he didn't think anyone with less experience would be able to get a catheter in me. He did have a lot of trouble getting the cath in, I started to mention that earlier but didn't want to give you something else to worry about.

I know a higher percentage of women get pregnant the first cycle after the HSG, apparently it cleans things out and increases fertility, I don't remember exactly but my RE told me the statistics on that.  It didn't help me, but here's hoping that it helps you!!
