What kind of bag/backpack for preschool?

My girls are starting in the fall? What are toddlers carrying around these days? Thanks!

Re: What kind of bag/backpack for preschool?

  • I think it depends on the school what size is more appropriate. If you need room for a full-size folder or 8x11 paper, avoid the "preschool" sizes because they generally aren't big enough.

I got DD1 one of the Mackenzie backpacks from PBK; I think it's the small size. I'm a sucker for their cute patterns and the matching lunchboxes. :)

I also looked at Land's End and L.L. Bean.

I have this for DD which is nice because it has wheels too and she can use it for travel.  It is a preschool size so not too big. Generally I just have a tote bag that I carry in for her in the morning and she has a smaller tote for herself.

  • Our school provides their own logo bag - they want them all to have the same one.

  • He's got a Car's backpack from the Disney Store.

Most kids (I have an older DD) carry character backpacks around here.

  • Carter has the small (not preschool) PBK Blue Camo one (with matching lunch box). Most kids in his class carry that backpack with their names and matching lunch boxes in their various patterns.

He doesn't really wear it on his back often, it is a pinch too big still but his preschool asks us to provide one large enough for a folder and without wheels.

  • our preschool requested the kids have large backpacks. My dd got a large PBK butterfly backpack.

  • We took DS1 to Super Target and let him pick out a bag. He chose a "Transformer" backpack.  When he starts Kindergarden, I'll get him a nicer one that will last for the time he's in elementary/middle school.  : )

DS2 starts prek next year and we'll do the same for him.

  • We got a great one for DS from Lands End. It's large enough for his folder, extra clothes, and anything else that needs to be thrown in. He usually carries it when it just has the folder.

  • I looked at the PBK for the girls and loved what they had. But they are wayyy to expensive when you are talking about buying 2 for twins. So I went with Lands End instead. The quality is just as good (have been told by several friends). They don't have all the cute patterns that PBK has, but I was able to get 1 in pink and 1 in purple and having their names monogrammed on them and shipped free to my house and paid half the price I would pay at PBK. I expect to get 2 years out of these bags and then they will get new ones starting in Kindergarten.

Oh and I didn't get the preschool size because it will not hold a standard 2 pocket file folder, which our school sends home with them everyday to communicate things with the parents. The next size up (not the elementary school size) worked great for us. We just got them this past week and they are just a little tiny bit big for them, but not big enough they cannot wear them. And they will grow into them over the next year. I wouldn't want any smaller.
