Cloth Diapering

How many loads a week?

I'm been lurking on this board a while and I think I may be starting my CD stash early, as a good friend of mine has offered me a very generous deal on her CDs that she won't be using.  DH and I are really gung ho about cloth diapering but when talking it over with my mom, I get the "well, you don't like to do laundry" thing and the "it might be inconvenient for you" thing, which is odd because she CDd both me and my sister when we were babies.  (Plus, I don't like getting up at dark-thirty but if I have a LO I'll have to do that too...sacrifice, woman!)

This will be my first child so I guess my question is, how much laundry can you expect to do in a week's time?

Re: How many loads a week?

  • I hate laundry too, but CD laundry is different. It all goes to the same place and doesn't require hanging and sorting which is what i hate about my own laundry

We wash every other day so 3-4 times a week. On laundry days we put the load in as soon as we get home and then switch to dryer after dinner. DH and I kinda split this responsibility as we remember. When it's done, we fold while watching TV and the babies are in bed. It takes 5ish minutes when we split it this way (using 1/2 pockets, 1/2 AIO). I found that even though i will wear them out faster, I only put them in the dryer and not line dry. I have to make it as easy for myself as possible or I won't do it. Maybe once a month on a Saturday I will sun some of the more stained ones if I remember.

My own laundry on the other hand.. I do about 2x a month :)

    This lol...

CD laundry is always done.  I'm a SAHM right now, until school starts again in the fall, so I do CD laundry during the day, but when laundry day falls on one of his days off, he happily helps, and even notices the full pail and will start it himself.  Our clothes, however, get washed when the laundry bins are full and we have no choice but to do it.  And they might sit in the laundry basket clean too, until they're all used up again, lol...... DH and I really don't like laundry Embarrassed Its one of those things I resolve to get better at every year, and so far have failed miserably with.

But we both LOVE to CD.  He even knows the wash routine and happily stuffs pockets since those are what he likes to use.  There was a (slightly morbid ;) ) thread last week about would your significant other continue to CD if you died, since I didn't know if he'd be up to doing the CD laundry all the time by himself I asked him and he said "For sure!  I would just simplify the stash to all pockets and maybe the Ai2's though." So there's another take on the CD love/laundry hate relationship.

Hope that helps your decision ;)

ETA: oh and all the extra laundry from babies spitting up, etc is only a load or two a week, and has actually helped me be a little more regular about our own clothes since we wash them all together.  Plus, with CD's the likely hood of having to change multiple outfits/bedsheets a day because of poop blowing out the diaper is greatly minimized.  I've NEVER had that problem and have heard so many disposable users complain about it.   So, in my opinion, CD's save me some laundry time!

  • I have a big stash and still EBF (poop is not too smelly) so we wash every 3 days.  I'm guessing at some point we will go to every other day.  I don't like doing laundry either but really, it's not that big of a deal.

Plus, you will be scrubbing and washing a lot less poopy clothes based on my experience.

  • I hate laundry. Hate! But diaper laundry is totally different. There's no complicated folding, nothing gets hung up, it all stays downstairs (we barely use our nursery yet, diaper changes all happen on the main floor) I do 3-4 loads a week and it's not a big deal at all.

I actually get excited for everything to be dry because I love seeing my storage baskets full of clean, ready to use diapers

  • As pp said, CD laundry is different.  I love hanging all of the pretty dipes on the drying rack and it's almost therapeutic taking them out of the dryer and matching soakers to shells.  I enjoy doing diaper laundry FAR more than I enjoy doing my own.  I wash every 3rd day.

  • 2-3 loads. And probably another load of baby clothes. Not bad in the grand scheme of things. It's not like I'm lugging them out to the river to beat them on a rock. I just put them in the washer and walk away. And nothing makes me happier than seeing my very colorful CD stash on the line to dry.
  • Our routine is washing Sunday, Tuesday, and Friday.

Diaper laundry is a piece of cake.  The worst part is the sorting/putting away (we use pockets, so I also pre-stuff) and I usually do that after DD goes to bed while I'm watching TV.  It's done in 10 minutes and I just put everything away in her room the next morning.

IMO, I would much rather take the time to do laundry three times a week than have to worry about buying diapers and then taking out the trash so often - I freaking HATE taking out the garbage!

    This!

I actually like washing my sons diapers... I really don't know why but it's enjoyable for me as weird as that sounds! I usually sun my diapers unless I'm about to run out though.

  • With twins I wash every other day. It just is too much for us to go every 3rd day, but with only one in diapers, I could easily see that working. For whatever reason, diaper laundry is no big deal for me. We've worked it into our bedtime routine and it takes maybe 5-10 minutes tops for me to sort my inserts, fold prefolds, and put it all away.
