splinter in bottom of foot...

I think Marshall has a splinter in the bottom of his foot.  This will be the first one (I'm sure of quite a few) for us.

Any tips on removal?  I think I'm going to wait till DH gets home because I'll need the help with distracting Hannah and all.

This is the kind of stuff I am NOT good with.  I know it's going to hurt him to come out.  :(

  • I don't know if there is anything specific you should do with babies (mine aren't here yet), but wash the site gently with soap and water. Pat dry, so you don't push the splinter further in. If you use needle-nose type tweezers, clean them well in rubbing alcohol first, and swab the site before and after with alcohol as well. Whatever you use for extraction you should swab in alcohol - not just tweezers. If the splinter is totally under the skin, tweezers won't be the best tool to use, because you don't want to dig around with something so big. Don't squeeze, because you can push it further in. If you need to use a needle (for a splinter completely under the skin), clean the needle with rubbing alcohol and make a little hole in the skin above the splinter and sort of spear the splinter and pull it out. It sounds like pretty rough treatment for a baby, so there may be other methods that will work better for your little guy. Maybe call the nurses at your doctor's office?

  • When I was a kid my grandma used to use drawing salve on me. I'd make sure and check with a pharmacist to make sure everything in it is safe for little ones (I think the active ingredient is tar or something like that) but you put that on, put a band-aid on and in the morning the sliver is on the band-aid. Wacky but it's a completely pain-free way to get it out!

  • We soak the body part in warm soapy water for as long as possible...at least 10-15 minutes (bath time perhaps), then pull it out with needle and tweezers. It takes two people...because usually the kid is having a fit.

  • working for a podiatrist, we got a lot of these calls and even saw some of them. you should soak it in warm water with epsom salt. pat the foot dry, and then put some antibiotic ointment and a band aid on it so that it stays moist until DH comes home. make sure you are in good light when you go searching for it, but the epsom salt and moistness will help to draw it out.
