I am going to give solid food a try this evening - she has been REALLY interested in what we eat lately so I thought I would give it a shot. At the 4 month appt the pedi said that when we do start solids that we could add things to her oatmeal and veggies to boost her calories. She is still on a 27 cal formula (formula added to BM), so I would make the oatmeal with that milk, but what else can you add to oatmeal? I was thinking of grinding up some quinoa, or adding some wheat germ for more protein. We see the pedi in a couple weeks for her 6 month check up and I plan to contact the nutritionist from EI next week to get some more direction. Clearly I will make sure she tolerates the plain oatmeal before I start jacking it up - but I just wanted to see what moms in real life do with their preemies. She has been a slow gainer and I am desperate to pack on some chub to this little nugget!
Re: adding calories to solid food?
We'll miss you sweet Debbie Girl (4.21.12) and sweet Cindy Girl (8.9.12)
You can add straight formula powder to her oatmeal, duocal or some kind of fat (avocado, coconut oil or evoo). Since she is just starting solids I would make sure she tolerates what you're giving her first and then add fat.
And yes, there is info in my blog - link in siggy
