I postponed purchasing my cribs until after the new safety regulations came out 6/28/11 (perhaps crazy, since the babies are due 9/19, but just felt better waiting). Since these twins will be our first and only, I just wanted some basic cribs that were safe and functional. So, I decided to get the IKEA Gulliver cribs. Since there's no IKEA near me, I lucked out that a friend was going near one on her travels and was willing to pick them up. When 'I checked online, there were none currently in stock at the store, but they expected a delivery before she was going to be there.
So, about a week before she was leaving, I was checking the product description and found that they referenced the old safety standards. I emailed customer services asking about the new safety standards (and referencing them very spcifically) and was basically told that OF COURSE the cribs met all safety standards. But, the next thing I know, there are still none in stock at the one store but now there's no expected delivery date. I start checking availability at other stores across the country, and they all say the cribs are unavailable with no expected delivery date.
I then emailed customer service a 2nd time and asked them if they had any idea when the cribs might be available. The response said that "We do not have any current update information regarding availability of the Gulliver crib as it does not meet IKEA standards." WHAT?!?!?!
Today I went on the website just to see if they were available again (this happened about 10 days ago...), and now there's not even a link to any cribs! So, if anyone was hoping to get IKEA cribs, I'm sorry. Or you're welcome. Or whatever.
And if you got this far, thanks for reading. Just found the whole thing a little crazy and wanted to share!
Re: possibly responsible for IKEA pulling cribs off shelves (long)
At least you saved me the 4 hour round trip drive to find out they don't have them. We're not planning on getting any until Sept/Oct....hopefully by then they'll have something figured out. I really don't want to pay $150 a crib X 3.
i have been putting off buying cribs, too. except i still haven't bought mine, ha!
good luck finding your cribs!
I'm not sure why this is so shocking or that you think you had anything to do with it.
New crib regulations went into effect. Ikea is a huge corporation (read lots of lawyers) that were probably anticipating this and pulled them off the shelve right around the date. The fact that you happened to call around the same time does not imply cause/effect.

You may very well be right. But, it just seems strange that the cribs were still on the shelves, listed on the website, etc for at least a few days AFTER the new regulations went into effect. Things only changed after I started asking specific questions. IKEA's initial email reply to me (that the cribs met all safety regulations) was after 6/28. It could very well all be coincidence, but the timing just seems a little off if they were planning to pull the cribs off the shelves this whole time.
