D-Vi-Sol

Has anyone's pedi recommended giving their LO D-Vi-Sol (Vitamin D)?  We haven't picked "our" doctor out of the group practice yet but when we went for DD's weight check last week the doctor we saw recommended we supplement her with D-Vi-Sol since I'm breast feeding.  She said they used to recommend it to all infants but now formulas contain Vitamin D so she only recommends it for breast fed infants.

I'm not thrilled with giving her a supplement just because I'm breast feeding.  I'm still on a PNV and I was always under the impression that my milk would meet her needs as long as my diet was relatively decent and I took vitamins.

I wasn't thrilled with this doctor anyway, she didn't seem too BF friendly.

Re: D-Vi-Sol

  • Mine is very BF friendly and said the same thing... not sure how I feel about it yet...

Mine is also very breast feeding friendly.  He is trying to get me to BF instead of EP and he also recommend D-Vi-Sol.

  • Our pedi prescribed tri-vi-sol in addition to me continuing on prenatals and our practice is very bf friendly. LO was jaundiced, and I read that breastfeed babies tend to be jaundiced because they don't get enough vitamin D so I was on board with it.

I should add that I have seen four different pediatricians at our practice and all of them have said this is standard for bf babies.

  • I am EBFing and my pedi recommended Poly-Vi-Sol. She said that even though I'm BFing and still taking prenatals, there are one or two vitamins/minerals that don't get passed thru breast milk, like iron for example. The PVS is like a baby multi-vitamin and I'm not against it. I was talking to my mom about it and she said she also gave it to all four of us... we're all still living =]

  • DD was in the NICU and received tri-vi-sol there.  We were told to continue it at home.  We have since switched to just vit D alone at the OK of our pedi.  We got the Carlson's kind that is just one drop instead of a whole dropper full of the nasty Enfamil kind that tastes bad and stains.  You just put the drop on your nipple before a feeding.  FWIW, we have seen multiple pedis at the office and in the NICU, and they have all recommended the vit drops since dd is EBF.

  • We use the Enfamil stuff and it smells like licorice. My husband takes some pumped breast milk (about 1/2 ounce) and mixes in one ml of the vitamin and dispenses it via a syringe while she sucks on his finger. That way I know she gets it and it helps to give her a little extra milk at night and give me a tiny rest from her constant nursing. :)

  • breast milk contains all essential vitamins and nutrients except Vitamin D and iron, so that is why they recommend that.  Research continues to show the importance of each.

Huh- our pedi hasn't mentioned anything about it.  I'll make a note to ask at her next appt.

The maternal health nurse recommended this to me and DD is EBF. I talked to my herbalogist (because I wanted to know what he suggested) and ended up putting her on cod liver oil. It contains all 4 kinds of vit.d and it only takes a couple drops a day. I had no idea there were 4 kinds of vitamin d lol, but I'll give DD what he recommends based on his experience and knowledge.

ETA-after doing my own research I found out the importance of finding a very "Pure" oil for DD, as opposed to many brands. It wasn't a problem because the one I bought from my herbalogist was one of the best ones out there.

Ditto, we use the Carlson drops- they can be found on Amazon (very high ratings) and are super easy to give to the baby.

  • DD takes poly-vi-sol. The pedi recommended it. Like others have said, it's the because of the lack of vitamin D and iron in BM. The pedi recommended the one with iron (that's the poly) because iron supplements generally taste bad, so he says it's better to start the iron young so they don't refuse it later.

We had a problem with DD spitting it back up... so now I keep it on the changing table and before I dress her in the morning I give it to her really slowly, like a couple drops at a time until she gets the full dose. I also keep a kleenex handy for any drips--that stuff stains!

Our pediatrician also recommended vitamin D drops b/c I'm breastfeeding and I also use the Carlson drops. They are dye-free, sugar-free, and preservative free.

  • Our pedi recommended Poly-Vi-Sol + Iron, didn't know the reasoning but I just figured it was b/c he was a preemie.  It gave him hellacious gas :(  Asked the doc at his 2month check up if it was necessary or if we could take him off and he said sure, it wasn't absolutely necessary at this point for him to have the supplement.Sad
