Food Allergy

dairy trial

My DS is MSPI and on Friday I was given the go ahead to trial dairy in my diet to see how he reacts (I've been dairy free since January and soy free since March). I don't even know where to begin or how to go about it. Can anyone who has done this recommend how much and what kind of dairy?? I was also told that if in 2 weeks he has not reacted to the dairy I should then go ahead and trial soy.  I'm terrified of revisiting the days when he was so miserable and uncomfortable as he is such a happy baby these days, but know that I am going to have to bite bullet and do this at some point.. eek!

I just noticed my ticker - oops! Clearly I am not 75 weeks pregnant Stick out tongue DS is 8 1/2 months.

Re: dairy trial

  • you can start with baked in things with dairy and if he tolerates that for a couple of days, try some cheese, or yogurt stuff like that.  If he still tolerates that try some milk in small amounts.  Then do the same with soy if he does okay with dairy.  GL!!

  • My son has a milk/soy (and other) allergies and this friday i gave him a piece of whole wheat bread that has soybean oil in it and he did fine.. so saturday i gave him 1/2 of a slice and sunday i  gave him an entire slice.  I sort of figured his soy allergy is gone b/c those were the lowest levels and even if it's still there he wouldn't have an ana reaction.   So you can do it that way... or if you want to be a bit more cautious do it this way -

Bake muffins and put 75% non-dairy/soy milk and 25% cows milk in it (or what ever your comfort level is).. so you should first give it to him in baked goods..

If he does well with it, i would bake something else and do 50% / 50% and then go up to 75% / 25%.. until you reach 100% cows milk.  Once he tolerates that, i would give him yogurt.  -sounds like a huge project and a LOAD of baking..

  • Thanks ladies! I should have added that I EBF, but am assuming I can approach this in the same way. I think I'll try a baked good first and take it from there depending on how he reacts.

If you EBF than it's easier. I think if you have a spoon of yogurt one day and 2 a few days later than you can actually test that way.. especially since your BF.. b/c it's already broken down..

I would do the baked test if you were giving it to your LO directly.. But if it's via BM, than you should do yougurt.

  • I ate a slice of pizza one day as a test, and thankfully LO was fine! I stuck with cheese and yogurt for a while, but then I expanded to ice cream and milk. Now we're trying to give dairy to LO directly.
