Baby's 1st cold

So LO just got over his first cold.  Lots of snot, coughing and general crabbiness.  He is much better now, but I wondered what 'tips' others have for getting through this.  It was a semi-miserable week (my mom can't watch LO when he's sick since she has a compromised immune system, so we had to shuffle childcare and I couldn't take days off work since everyone else is on vacation right now and DH just started a new job so can't take days off yet) but we got through it using the bulb syringe (which he HATES), and a humidifier for the bedroom.  Also gave a little baby tylenol for the fever when it made him really crabby.  I just got a nosefrida from amazon... LOVE LOVE LOVE it.. it gets so much snot out, and LO doesn't get nearly as crabby about it as he did with the bulb syringe.

What does everyone else do for their LO's when sick to ease the stuffiness/snot/cough?  And when do you feel safe taking them out in public?  LO is fine now, but still has a very occasional cough.  I doubt he's going to infect anyone now, but don't want to get dirty looks for taking him out in public.

Re: Baby's 1st cold

  • I do pretty much the same as you did, but also take dd in the shower for as long as she'll last. Seems to help clear her up a little. The older she gets, the less she seems bothered by colds, which makes it a little easier to handl As for going out in public, before she was 1, I'd always wait like a week (until runny nose and all coughs were gone) then I realized half the kids out in public have runny noses and coughs, so now I only wait 1-2 days. If we're meeting with friends I warn them she was just sick and let them decide if they want to hold off, Hope that helps and glad he's over the cold now!
