What about the name Cannon?

What are your thoughts on Cannon Rhys M___ (3 syllable last name)

We would like to honor my FIL who is terminally ill, but neither of us care for his first or middle names. His favorite place is Cannon Beach, OR- it's where he wants his ashes spread. We've taken several trips there as a family.

Thoughts on the name Cannon? Do you think it'd age well? Does it feel too out there?

TIA.

Re: What about the name Cannon?

  • Eh, NMS. I'm glad, though, that it's not yet another surname-for-first name (Carter, Jackson, Mason, etc.), but I also feel like it's along the same lines as Hunter and Gunner... uber masculine weaponry name. That alone makes me raise a brow. However, it has an interesting meaning to it. What is your FIL's first name, though? Why not that? Or his MN?

  • I am okay with Cannon - not a name I would chose but also not a name that I totally dislike. However, I am not so sure about the middle name which I would not even know how to pronounce. My philosophy is if you are going to go with a more unusual first name, make the middle name normal in case the kid prefers to use the middle name.

Concerning honoring your FIL, another option is to chose another name that starts with the same letter as his name (and just telling him that this is the significance of it). In some cultures, it is considered impolite to use someone's name while they are still living, so this is what is done instead (for example, my middle name is Suzanne to honor someone who was still living at the time whose name was Sarah)

  • I don't know...makes me think more of things like printers and cameras and not of little boys. That being said, it's not a name I would choose, but it's not horrible. I have a friend in the UK of Middle Eastern decent who's name is Quanon, which is pronounced the same. I like the guy, so the name rings in positive.

Rhys is technically the "correct" spelling for the name Reese/Reece.
  • I like it. It's different but not weird. I think you have a nice name picked out there.

  • I really don't like it. I do like PP's suggestion of honoring him by using the same initials or something along those lines.

Pretty much all of this.  It's a little different because of the meaning, but using a weapon as a name is just odd to me in general, so it isn't personally a name I would use.

I think others have had great suggestions - use FILs first name, middle name or the first initial in choosing a different name, even if it is for the middle name.

  • I think it is a cute name.  I know an upcoming 3rd grader named Kanon.

I don't think I would spell it like a cannon though.

    Canon, Kanon, Kannon...

  • I'm really into names that have special meaning. I actually really like it--being a teacher, it's neat to see kids who don't have the same name as everyone else like all the Emma's out there right now. I think you should go for it--but I agree, go with a little different spelling. :)

I agree,  I think it definitely looks better with a K, or at least not spelled like the camera/weaponry :)
IMO, the name itself also depends on the family though! Your child and family could totally suit that style of name perfectly! :)

Whereas it wouldn't seem right for me to call my baby a name like Ryder, Hunter or Gunner (Doesn't suit me at all and Dutch half of the family wouldn't even understand why I'd choose a name like that, haha)..
I do know several kids with such names, and it suits them (and their parents) absolutely perfectly!!

Edited to add: I just wanted to say, your reason behind choosing this name is very thoughtful and sentimental, which I think would be a wonderful reason for choosing a name like this.  Perhaps just spelled differently :)

  • I like it. I went to school with a boy name Cannon or Canon (can't remember), and no one made fun of his name. I also think it's a beautiful sentiment as well.

  • I like it. I think that if you are not going to honor him with your FIL's name, but with something that is special to your FIL, you should at least spell it correctly (using Cannon instead of the alternate spellings). He likes Cannon Beach....not Kanon Beach, Kannon Beach, etc.

My friends just recently had a boy and named him Cannon. I love the beach too....I live about 2hrs away from there. And I love Rhys....it was on our list for a boy name.....

This.  I think the first and middle names have a nice ring to them, and Rhys is my nephew's MN.  With Canon you have the musical connotations.  Kanon is a popular name here in Japan right now but as a girl's name.

  • I agree with PP that if you're going to use Cannon as a first name, it might be nice to consider a more traditional middle name.
